My pleasure. Please tell me how it works out. Enjoy, Keni Lee
Yes Nobby. Excellent suggestion. GDgb tuning gives you tones 1513 from the G major scale. A great way to extend 3 string CBG tuning: GDg 151 tuning onto a four string CBG.
GDg tuning: http://youtu.be/aGX3bWHSHt0
There are limitless ways to string and tune a CBG, but in general I use fragments of the full 6 string tuning:
Mediun gauge standard strings EADgbe tuned down DGDgbd - easier tension on neck too
3 string: D(GDg)bd - very primal
4 string: DG(Dgbd)
5 string: D(GDgbd) - The low G is the high drone G on a banjo - traditional Bluegrass tuning - Earl Scruggs, etc.
6 string: DGDgbd - Open G aka Spanish tuning - Walking Blues, Cross Road Blues, etc.
4 string: D(GDgb)d - your suggestion!
Working this way is very frugal. You can really explore the Open G tuning in a varity of ways.
Additionally by simply retuning GDg to ADf# which is Open D from 6 string D(ADf#)ad you can operate in a totally different way: http://youtu.be/jVdAAuvR-k0 - Devil's Tuning Method
Note: Having the 3rd tone for the highest string is like Open C tuning: CGCgce / 151513
CG(Cgce) This fragment is actually like the GDgb tuning you suggested. The fingerings are all the same but the key is C. This tuning can be obtained using medium gauge standard strings also.
There is a method behind my madness. LOL Enjoy, Keni Lee
