Hi Henry, The scale is a matter of preference. A short scale, 13-15 inches will give you a mandolin sound, the longer scales will change the tunings lower and lower, according to where you want your range to be, that is, a guitar is usually between 24-27 inches, a bass can be from 30-41 inches. You will have to use the appropriate gauge string for the scale length. Clear?
