you could always slot the nut and bridge a little so it could be played as a more normal four stringer too... if you felt so inclined.

Mandolin #7 front
"on a 1.5" wide neck blank, i generally don't taper the neck. any wider, and i do, and it looks pretty freakin sweet. my purpleheart mandolin has a tapered neck, i think it was a 2" blank.
