Marty O replied to Craig Cox's discussion restring resonator in the group Building a Cigar Box Guitar 101
"Use an A, D and G String and then tune the  A to G. This then tunes the CBG to a G chord (1st 5th Octave). For a banjo tuning of G B D you could use an A, and 2 x D strings. Tune the A string to G, a D string to B and keep the other D string…"

restring resonator

New strings for my "regular" guitars mean "new" strings for my cb's too! I want to set up the 3-string resonator to play some banjo parts in Pretty Boy Floyd, key of G. Is this possible? Which strings would be best? What tunings would anyone suggest? Also, is it possible to set up a 3 string cbg to mimic a mandolin? just wonderin'...thanks in advancecraig…See More

Hi Craig. Nice to hear from you, and thanks for the kind words regarding the da Vinci guitar. It turned out surprisingly well. Funny how that happens. I'm hoping to get to York this year but it buts right up to when I have to take my daughter to college. Might be tricky timing. I take it you're planning on going? Sure hope to see you there.

Hello Craig.

I read your comment. If you are interested in learning songs for 3 string CBG, please check out my instructional video CD 4. www.ebay.com Search: keni lee. The CBG is tuned GDg (Key of G). Additionally, you may find CD1 helpful too. It also contains 3 string CBG lessons, but with the CBG tuned and strung DAd. (Key of D) Due to the fact the intervals between the strings are the same, 151 from the Major scale, all the fret positions are the same. The CBG just sounds in another key. CD1 is mainly for 6 string guitar tuned in open D. (DADf#ad) Although, what I have been teaching students is that there is a relativity to open tunings. I basically reduce the 6 string arrangements into 3, 4, or 5 string arrangements. On CD 1, I teach "You Got To Move" for 6 string. After working with the CD 4 lessons, you will easily understand the approach, and be able to play this song on 3 string CBG. Enjoy your practice.
