Chris's Discussions

Chris replied to Will King's discussion Short Neck Bass in the group Cigar Box Basses
"a 30" scale length is fairly common - Paul McCartney is one example of a famous musician who commonly plays a bass that short.  Ibanez has made one that goes down to 28.5" scale length.  Those are the common mass produced scales,…"

Chris replied to David Clark's discussion 2 String Bass help in the group Cigar Box Basses
"You could use that scale length, certainly.  Frets would be the same then.  Good luck! EBs are nice basses, btw.  I have an Epiphone EB3 project I keep meaning to work on"

"BIG +1 to Morphine and Mark Sandman.  There's a CD box set of his stuff called Sandbox and it's great"

Chris replied to Marmelade's discussion double, upright bass in the group Cigar Box Basses
"Depends on the player's style.  If he's used to a regular double bass the angle might be necessary, and definitely is if he wants to play up high.  Looking at your drawing, the bassist would be limited by the neck join to the…"

"37" isn't bad at all, that should be fine.  You could go longer with weed wacker cord but whatever works for you. Give it a try and see how it sounds!"

Chris replied to Marmelade's discussion double, upright bass in the group Cigar Box Basses
"I'd move the bridge further down, try for around a 40" (101.6cm) scale length, that'll make it easiest to have the strings feel tight and not floppy.  Looks a little short in the picture.   I agree with making a flat…"

Chris replied to Marmelade's discussion double, upright bass in the group Cigar Box Basses
"Traditionally the fingerboard does end far from the bridge.  No reason you couldn't go further, but it'd be kind of hard to get to any positions far onto the body unless you have a tremendous reach, especially because the neck is set…"

"I'm wary of using steel strings because of neck strength, plus since I don't have a hard fingerboard on there I'd be worried about them chewing up the neck over time.  Weed wacker or poly strings for sure.  Depending on what…"

Chris commented on Will Carter's group Cigar Box Basses
"Alright, I'm working on a regular CBG build at the moment, but once I finish that I'm gonna use the parts I have to make a bass.  I think I'll only be going 2 string, likely an E and A.  I have a 3 foot long poplar 1x2 for…"
