No, they are bolted together inside with really big washers to spread out the stress. But watch out if you try to make one like this: http://www.cigarboxnation.com/photo/cbmd-4-tail-and-bridge You really need the strength of the fingerboard running the whole length of the instrument or it will begin to bow at the join of the boxes.
