Yes spray can is used and yes the hot water trick works fine but I just leave the cans ont tin shed roof in sun ...... free solar work just as well .

Use Canned Spray Paint myself Bones, not sure if you use, or have heard of this little Paint Trick/Method I read a while back, (and use) I think from a previous Cigar Box Nation post?, which is to immerse the Spray Can in a container of hot water for about 10 minutes, the theory being (and it seems to work) is that the spray comes out at a higher pressure and a finer mist, must admit I was bit worried about the "Can Exploding" when first trying, but have used it numerous time since with no drama's :-D
