How cool is the hop-a-long?? So I have bough one old transistor radio and one valve radio. Got them back in working condition now (the batteries for the 1960 radios have been discontinued in Australia but found a source. Next step figure out where to connect the input jack..
Hey, just a thought, could the tape player be used to add echo? Cbg tape player amp with reel tape echo? One of you should try it.
Rick....... did you snip the wires off the cassette motor at the power source? That's where you might get the tape drive sound. Saw some of the stuff you repurposed, nice. On Cape Cod we have Free Swap Shops at the town dumps where you can find all sorts of free stuff to work with, you'd have a ball browsing here.
BJ that is one cute little radio. I am so envious of you guys in the U.S. it's so hard to find nice old stuff over here in England and if we buy anything off the US Ebay the shipping makes it far too expensive. I bought a 1960s stella 6 string for about $80 but by the time I'd paid shipping + custom duty + VAT (more tax) and a handling fee from the couriers, it had cost me double the price. I really liked the Fisher Price cassette player amp. My daughter had one when she was 2 years old - now I wonder what happened to it?
I have done the tapehead conversion and worked well except I could still hear the tape drive sound. Got an old boombox in the basement with two detachable speakers and graphic EQ which is not exactly vintage but might sound good. Have recently found some radios from late 60's early 70's that are cool looking but I have never tried a radio conversion, so here I am looking for experience. I work with found materials so I am looking forward to repurposing some stuff.
Thats cool...I want to hear it!
i just got off of ebay, i spent about an hour looking...The have over 16,000 tube radios, It is impossible to see them all. I found a few bodies i am bidding on myself.
Thanks to Slow Hound, I found a guy on Craigslist with an old Emerson tube radio like this one:

I am supposed to go pick it up tomorrow. It has an extra speaker cabinet that is used for stereo sound, so I thought it would make an awesome CBG amp.
I wasn't able to find any schematics for it yet, but still looking.
Papa - LM386 is an audio chip and with a few more cheap components you can make a 1/2 watt amp which is enough for a cigar box or tin amp. Check out the diagrams on beavisaudio scroll to bottom of page to smokey amps.
here's one I built into an old tobacco tin
Hey BeetleJuice,
Just saw this on the bay in UK. Might have been made for you.
