Quick and easy way to build a great sounding small amp

Without trying to search through the whole group.....

Has anyone built a cigar box amp using the MAH5 circuit board?

I've just finished my second build using the MAH5 board, and I find that from the "Blues" setting through to the "Heavy metal" setting, I get quite bad interference/hum etc if I turn the volume up above 3rd.

Is this normal or not?

I bought my speakers (4" 8ohm 5watt) seperately, and just wondring if they might be the problem.

Cheers

Thanks,  I have added it to my little collection of schematics.

Thanks for the comment.

It was fun to build this from parts that I had laying around.  I just had to buy the pots and the jacks.  I have a schematic here for a simple distortion circuit with a 2N3904 transistor.  I know I have those here as well as the 1N4148 diodes you mentioned.  So I may try that one too.

I did not see your JFET preamp circuit here.  If it is not too complicated I could give it a go.  It has been quite a while since I have melted this much solder.

Have fun.

Right on! I have the "Cook your own Distortion" book, lots of interesting circuits.although most of them require now obsolete semiconductors, I have also built dis one, try TL072-TL082-RC4558& LF353 for variations of distortion, also try 1n4148 diodes, they've got da best crunch & will give U a little more output than the glass germanium you've got there,I also like using the 9v-4.5v dead battery simulator, alot of rockers say they get the best sounds out of their effects when the battery is about to die, hence the dead battery mod.

I've posted a JFet Preamp Layout if U wanna try yer hands @ transistor circuits

Hello,

I just finished a distortion circuit.  It is based on a web article called "Cook Your Own Distortion."

My first attempt had two sets of diodes and a switch to change between soft and hard clipping.  I ended up with too many wires and never got it to work.  So I started over and took some of the parts out of the schematic.  I voted for soft clipping only.  The circuit was easier to assemble and it works.

I built a small box to put it in and away we went.  I learned a lot.

The little board has a power supply that provides both 9V and 4.5V to the circuit.  The op amp is a NE5532 that I had laying around.  The circuit has volume and OD controls and an on/off switch.

I plugged it into a two watt CB Gitty amp board and it lit that thing up.  It got a lot louder and created some serious overdrive.  The speaker came from an old boom box.

No more clean sounds for me.  Here are some pics of my messy little circuit and the guitar.

I'll take a look this afternoon when I can get home.

Shaun, you may want to consider this as your base. Inexpensive & you can add as desired.

I don't think it gets easier than a LM386 chip Amp?

Does anyone have anymore simpler plans for an amp. I'm gonna make one soon.
