As for wood, I have been buying oak and maple 1x2s at Home Depot for necks and getting boxes for $4 each at a local cigar store. Best look closely at the boxes... some of the ones I got are MDF and they sound terrible. I have also built my own boxes using 1/8" baltic birch plywood left over from other projects, it was OK but I think a mahogany "door skin" would be a lot better. They are available at real (not big-box) lumberyards.

Comment by clarkkraft on May 11, 2013 at 2:08pm: Go to your local cigar shop and ask. Tell them you plan to build a guitar out of it and I'll bet you get a few. I like to find old cedar boxes in antique stores, they can be a tad pricy but the tone of a cedar box is really great !!!

Look up 'Windsor Plywood'. I'm not sure, but I believe they have stores here & there across Canada. I know the store here in Vancouver has all kinds of exotic woods.
