Hi all.
Its all been said below, but that doesnt mean I shouldnt say it either... Major thanks to Chickenbone John for organising the day and for everyone else who contributed, made the tea, coffee, great food and threw in their contributions. Personally I was a little overawed by the enthusiasm and creativity of everybody, particularly as I didnt know anything about the CBG world until 3 weeks ago, so I was OK with keeping a relatively low profile and watching rather than getting stuck in...what I do know now is that it is a world I want to be part of! I couldnt stay for the show on the night unfortunately and when I left Ben warned me that I should treasure those last three weeks, cos my life was never going to be the same. Sure enough, 3 am the next morning I was lying awake planning my first second and third builds!!!!
Both of chickenbone Johns ideas are good 'uns. The Birmingham Arts Fest is a good outlet and it would be good to open a few peoples eyes at 'normal' guitar shows. I agree with Smojo about future focus for any meets and the further organisation and focus that would be needed to make any of the ideas work.
Anyway it was great to meet you all, looking forward to keeping in touch and tapping you all up for advice etc in the future.
Best wishes, Alan (still working on a CBG type nickname)

hey pete,my philosophy is [if it can be thought of it can be done] you just have to figger out how to do it. that is a idea i have not heard of but it has substance. glad fer all you fellow cbg fellows over the big pond.sounds like yall all had a great time. if i try to figger out the resonatin slide i,ll give you a holler across the big pond and let you know what i come up with.

Hi,
It may be the inspiration from the festival, but ideas come into my head for all sorts of things. I am an ideas man. Full of ideas, most of them impractical but i'm not too good at building stuff. Next week I will be inventing bikes without wheels (in my head), but can I throw one of my slightly less rediculous ideas out there for you electrimajician inventors to see if it would be possible?
This morning while waiting for the kettle to boil I picked up the nearest item to hand to use as a slide. It was a harmonica and by angling it I'm sure I could hear sound resonating from the harps metal case, so---
How about a slide with a bulit in resonator, or with a very small pickup such as a piezo and a small battery and speaker. I realize that by now you are imagining a slide the size of a sausage dog, but maybe with a steel type slide as used on lap steels that you dont stick your finger inside?
I imagine it would give a nasty distorted sound with the wire windings and the sliding. Feedback and ridicule welcome.

Hey Neil,
It was me that sent out the warning, but in a freindly manner. I would hate for misunderstandings between forum members, so I thought it best to raise the issue to see how we stand before it was too late.
Peace,
Pigeon Pete.

Stupid computers !! My message just disapeared so here we go again.
Is it against forum policy to post links to stuff for sale e.g ebay items?
If not ,then a seperate heading to post stuff for sale might be useful,
It may not suit some if it draws attention to stuff they are already bidding on, but you could say you are bidding, and maybe know if a fellow forum member is already interested? I used to be on a forum for a certain make of guitar and ebay links and photos used to be posted regularly, and members own stuff for sale without causing any problems. What prompted me was, I just looked on ebay, not something I do very often, well only when I'm awake anyway, and saw a Guantanamra CB with the image of a guitar sound hole and strings on the top, (they'll be givin folks ideas !!). The ad said it was cardboard covered in paper so maybe not of much interest, I don't know.
Pigeon Pete.
[Thought I'd call myself that ,as I get called that by my family if I spend too much time down at the pigeon loft.]

While still feeling pretty sad to have missed the event on Saturday - and somewhat 'out of it' as everybody except me has now met - I would really welcome another. If it happens to be down in Birmingham again then I'll find a way to get there, but if it is in Lancs/Yorks area then easier to get to. Glad you guys had a great time - I knew it would all go well: how could it posssibly fail ? God knows I've spent enough years moaning that all the CBG events are on the other side of the Atlantic - and then I go an miss our first one over here ! Think I'll change my name to 'Kut off Kev' ! ;-)

John, both great ideas and you know I'm with you on the guitar show one. I'm sure we all want more of some sort. Now that I've (sort of) returned home to normality, there are all sorts of things I wished I'd seen, done, played, said etc on Sat. It was brilliant and I'm sure there's a lot of mileage to be had from a similar event. The camaraderie and family vibe was a big part of the buzz for me and although I didn't pluck up courage to take the stage, a little more time might have got me there and I would have enjoyed the 'safe' environment of not worrying about making a fool of myself and the experience of playing with a small band. I think there might have been one or two others feeling the same. I'd love to meet again, maybe in Spring and now that we've forged some new friendships we could help/encourage each other to develop in whatever way each person wants. The great thing about Saturday is that it felt like we were all part of a family - an elite one and although it's great to spread the word (and I know I've been part of that process) it's nice to keep some of that special stuff to ourselves.

I think the CBG thing for all of us, is firstly a means of expressing our individuality, we don't run with the general pack, we like the weird and wonderful and it's great that we've found our little niche and some pals to share it with. Following on from that, is taking our creativity and developing it into something even more satisfying - getting good at it (and some are already very good)! This is where we can probably help each other now. Build on the friendships, share knowledge, encourage confidence etc. We can all learn something new from each other but we also need some focus, and a little leadership to shape it and that's what we got with the fest. I'd like to see a progression of that, maybe more playing workshops but split for beginners and more advanced. A longer weekend would have been good or even two seperate ones - beginners and advanced, or maybe a general day and a morning after (for those capable) to just chew the cud, catch up on things and maybe jam a little with your expert guidance.

We've sown a lot of seeds and it would be great to encourage them to grow. Maybe we could also get one or two small local meetings. There's a few of us in the Yorks/Lancs area so maybe we could also get the odd informal get-together somewhere.

I know that on the day, when I was asked "When's the next CBG Fest"..my reaction was sort of "I don't know, that's up to someone else to decide", as I was feeling pretty spaced out generally...but I'm coming round to the fact that there just might be the demand for another event!

I think I might draft out a simple questionnaire just to prompt people to think about where we go from here, or maybe start a separate discussion theme.

One thing I'd like to do as soon as possible is to get a press release out with some pics..are people OK with using pics been posted in this site? If someone wants to write-up a report, feel free, otherwise I'll do something.

I've tried not to to think about another event..but the idea just won't go away -there are just two thoughts that I've had.

The first is a rather different concept to what we did with the 1st UK CBG Fest, and that would be to take some space at a guitar show - we could pool our resources (and that would mean putting up a bit of cash) to rent a stand. The main benefit would be for builders to put their products out to the wider guitar-playing public..but we might also be able to get a feature on the demo stages that they have at these events. I have had a very small stall at a show (in Manchester) in the past, and it was worthwhile - I reckon if the UK Nation got together we could do it as a collective effort and get a larger stand than just one trestle table ...and it would be a fantastic profile raising excercise...and very possibly another fun day! I reckon it would totally blow people's minds seeing and hearing this stuff..although they probably don't like to think so, a lot of guitarists and the music trade are pretty conservative, and manufacturers keep trying to tinker with the basics to create something different in order to sell their products...but they ain't got nothing like this reserve of talent and madness that exists here.

Another thought (and after I'd fixed the date of the 1st CBG Fest I was kicking myself for not remembering about it) is to do something similar to our first event, but take advantage of the fact the Birmingham hosts "ArtsFest", one of the biggest free arts events in Europe. It's a weekend long affair, with all sorts of performances, music, drama, dance, all over the city, at venues which range from the street corner or a cafe, to big outdoor stages in Centenary Square and the in the Town Hall. The potential audience exposure is VAST...Crossroads Blues Club took a stall for one day (we just couldn't staff it for two days) as part of the general promotional opportunity and we handed out leaflets and busked..it was hard work but we had a great time.

Anyhow...just a thought...but if someone wants to come up with some other ideas and kick things around for how we go from here..let's hear it.

WOW! What can I say?!!
Fantastic to meet all you guys at long last... its comforting to know that there are 'others' out there!!
I can only reiterate what has gone before - a huge than you to John for organizing the unorganizable, to everyone who hoiked up their big cahooners and took to the stage - especially the open mic guys (it goes without saying that the combined talent of Hollowbelly, Redshaw and Chickenbone was electric), to Johns Mrs for sorting out the food, to the house band, and to everyone who made it there, joined in and shared something special.
A thought too for Oliver who got stranded at Calais and didnt make it this time - terrible luck mate, but we are already all looking forward to seeing you play at next years event!

So, next event. Anyone free this weekend???
