Hi Tim...thanks for the contribution. As part of my keeping everything manageable and affordable ethos, this would be WAY too expensive. No disrespect to anyone, but I reckon we have robust enough scene here in the UK to cover all the bases in terms of performance, building, teaching etc.

As it was, I led some basic classes and play-along sessions..hardly masterclass, but it worked (I had to pitch it for all levels of ability, as we had some people there who were pretty experienced, and others who had never even seen a cigar box guitar before!)...and I did see Hollowbelly showing some of his playing techniques to people during the coffee breaks.

About the event growing, I don't want to force it to get huge - I believe it will always be a specialist niche sort of thing, so that will be self-limiting. However, there is scope for improvement and expansion. I've discussed this whole thing with Ben (Roosterman), and at the moment, the UK Nation seems to be the main point of contact for such like-minded people, and as such I reckon people sort of 'get the idea' of what it's all about....it's best we steer the direction and keep things developing ourselves rather than have someone else move in and hi-jack the whole idea, whether that's either performance or guitar making.

Whatever direction next year's CBG fest takes, we've got the experience of what worked this time round, so there's no intention of 'throwing out the baby with the bathwater'...and we'll be building on what worked. I think it goes with the whole CBG approach...using resources that are to hand, keeping it simple, thinking outside the box, bucking convention and producing something unexpected and unique.

and by suggesting the bringing someone over idea, it was in no way meant as being disrespectful to all you guys here that can play and do the bizz, just thought it'd be a something different ? i'll shut up now and go !!

just curious and just a thought, but how much would it cost to get someone maybe like Shane to come over and do a gig / masterclass ? probably too much so maybe a daft idea ! i didn't make it to this years, it was all new to me at the time and not being able to play never mind have a clue on how to build one, I didn't want to feel out of place. £25.00 didn't sound unreasonable to me, and depending what's going on at next years, a little more probably wouldn't put me off either. ideas are obviously being nurtured and if the basics where set up reasonably early in the new year, it'd give folks the chance to maybe start putting a few quid away each month to save up for it ?
Comment by Sherb on November 13, 2009 at 12:10pm
Well for what its worth... I think £25 would have been well worth it for the whole day. I and mi mates only paid a fiver for the night do... a bargin.

Now on a more serious point.... that one event gained 3 new member from my small circle of friends who attended. Do we want this "sub culture" to grow or are we happy with the way it is? It is not always benificial to expand. Whilst we all want new input what I would avoid is over expsour to those unsymphetic to our joint ideas/ideals

Keep it small/ish

I think all respect and admaration should go to chicken bone for last years event, I/we thought it perfect and you can't improve on that.

( we could do with a sppell cheeecker onn ear)

Hi guys 'n';n gals, thanks for the input..please keep it coming.

As regards the cost, I felt it was about right (the only thing is, we might be able to offer some concessionary rates), so I reckon that will be a fixed point (unless I can get a handsome grant from somewhere). No matter where we hold it, there's bound to be an element of expense asociated with travel and accommodation, but I can't do much about that...I did wonder about 'home hosting' by locals to help things...I've not got much room in the house but I've got a big garden and family sized tent!

Anyhow, my idea for ArtsFest would be to use the model of this years CBG Fest as the core of the event, but to add on some satellite extras. Last year the blues club took a stall in the city centre for a day, and it was great..we had power, PA and amps and did some busking, and always got a big crowd, especially when young Karl played my CBG! We could also sell stuff to the public.

There are LOTS of performance venues, including pubs, cafes, concert halls and mega outdoor stages. My band have played at Arts Fest for several years, so I know the system for getting on the performers list, but there's no guarantee whether you end up playing to 50 people or to 5 000!

There are also free workshops, so maybe we could do workshops open to the public (this on might just be beyond what we could cope with at present...but I thought I'd throw in the idea).

The main problem with all these ideas would be manpower. We'd need people that could take on each of these things - a squad to man the stall and organise the busking, someone to host workshops, performers for the city centre stage..and someone to generally co-ordinate things and keep it together. Last time I coped because we had Ken, Helena, my wife and the venue staff pitching in all day and thru' the evening, but this would need extra people to take on the responsibility for these other events. I'm pretty confident that I could get everything place to facilitate the main meet-up and evening gig, plus the stall, busking and city stage performances...but we'd need the commitment for a few people to take on the responsibility of being there on the day to run these other things, as I can't be everywhere at the same time! I'd be taking on a vastly increased workload, but if I know some of you would be up for pitching in, I reckon we could pull it off. To a certain extent, it would probably mean some people wouldn't get to see everything, as there would be bound to be an overlap, but the core get-together and evening gig would remain to tie things together.

There's a lot to think about...but last time I rode the wave of support from the UK Nation and it seemed to turn out more than OK...can we catch another bigger one for next year? Discuss - please use both sides of the paper.....

Regards

John
