Hey CB John - at risk of showing myself up for probably not having read something vital and obvious - what is the deal with the open mic situation - do we just pitch up with an instrument and form a disorderly queue? Not sure what I can bring guitar wise as it sounds as though I will be lugging camera equipment around for the day!

Thanks for that David,
your way seems better than mine, i just bolted the neck to a block of oak .
then gluded and screwwed that to the box
i knew after id done it there must be a better way, again thanks

Hi Soulcatcher,
I made a neck pocket out of 3 pieces of wood - 2 smaller ones glued to the underside top of the box ("serious glue") and the third longer piece glued to these two. I don't have a router (or the skill to use one) and found that for this box the wood I picked up from the local wood merchant (measures around 15mm thick) gives a standard strat neck the right height for a good string action.

I have made 3 other CBGs using this method (6 strings fitted with electric 8s using a strat neck) and normally use 4 screws - smaller length than standard neck screws and these are hidden within the box. I was concerned that the extra strings would need more bracing so fitted the neck to this socket with six screws fitting flush with the wood. This then lies flat onto the bracing glued to the back of the box

and 4 standard strat neck screws and neck plate screw through this and part way into the other piece of wood containing the 6 neck screws. Ideally I would have preferred the neater method of 4 neck screws fitting all the way through but the box is too wide.

Also I did find after the first one I did the box lid starts to lift under the string pressure so I use decorative hinges as you see below - with less strings hopefully it will not be a problem for you. If you do need to add hinges I have found B&Q turbodrive/turbosharp 2.5x10mm screws to work the best as even the smallest noncutting thread tends to cause the box wood to split.

How did you decide to fix the neck on yours?

out of interest David how did you connect the neck to the body ??
cause ive just finished my build using the same box as you
(photos would be cool)

Hi, Here are a few pics of my latest build - an 8 string CBG

As regards playing workshops, it will depend on what instruments people bring along..I'm assuming some 3 and 4 string slide , maybe 3 string/4 string fretted & chord work, diddley bow maybe..and I'm always happy to teach 6 string open tuning slide and standard tuning.

I'm intending to break down into smaller groups, and there should be a fair number of spare instruments around too...so I'm thinking we'll be able to cover most stuff that's likely to crop up. Do shout up if there's anything in particular you want to learn.

I've been thinking about Twitter etc...but simply haven't had the time..if someone wants to get something done with it that's cool. With just over 3 weeks to go, that would be good...one less thing for me to do!! Just keep me posted what's going on so we don't duplicate things.

Hey Lefty, chrome ones from Wilkinson store cheap as chips, they are for mounting mirrors on the wall, hope that helps ya.
