Trumpet Hornpipe. I play mandolin and fiddle and to hear people discussing the Trumpet Hornpipe on this site is "music" to my ears. I play it on both of the above instruments (in G) and built a cigar box Mandolin (only single courses of strings) earlier this year. I do know that there are other 'mandolins' out there that have been built by cigar box members.

Soulcatcher - sounds like my kinda thing - can I ask where that village is please ?
Sherb - I do hope there is room for trad folk tunes on home made instruments here cos I play that more than blues. Tend to attempt a bit of bluegrass now and then too.

Great song..Copperhead Road..go for it!!

And yes...there is definitely room and scope room for trad English,Irish, Celtic stuff ..it's something I'd love to see develop. The other day I had a go at "Lowlands" on my DeepTone CBG , because something had just clicked in my mind, and the insturments are well suited to this rootsy music. Yet another direction to travel on...

Sherb - just looked up Copperhead Road - only 2 chords so it should be easy to do a passable version of it

Now this is what I like to see...... What other British tunes can members produce.
I love the Blues, but we have such a heritage within these isles that we would be blind if we ignored it.
The reason that I attempted the Blue Dulcimer thing last build was that I was on an old bike rally and one of the Irish lads produced a Strumstick and entertained us all night.
Is there room or interest on this forum for English/British/Celtic tunes on home made instruments?

On a totally different tack can anyone "DO" Copperhead Road (Steve Earl) on a three string?
Comment by Kevin Lawton on October 21, 2010 at 11:37pm
This is one of those tunes which begins on the root, so the first four identical notes at the beginning of the first and third lines of this tune are the root note of the key you are playing it in.
Seeing as how we tend to get some smallish cigar boxes here in ol blighty, probably due to the small cigars, then perhaps a CIgar Box Mandolin is a reasonable option ?
One of those kinda-egg-shaped 'Olde Oak Ham' tins can be used to make a 'Hamdolin' in the same fashion as a cookie-tin-banjo. Biggest problem I found was how to open the tin to access the ham without wrecking its potential as an instrument body.

Just.. posted a version of The Trumpet Hornpipe on here and YouTube, played on the mandolin..no idea what key it's in...I could probably figure it out (I'm sure someone will set me right on that)...but it's enough for me to have remembered (approximately) how to play it. Nothing to do with cigar box guitars or anything, so suppose I'll have to build a mandolin now...
