There's quite a few guys out there selling for about that mark. Personally I'd stay away from the £70 ebay "stickinabox" build but that's just preference. Have a good look around as there's a lot of styles out there. If you're after something custom made with more of your own personality put into it then it might be worth spending a little more for something bespoke.
This is the kind of thing I sell for around the £125 mark
That one sold for a little over that though I let it go cheap as it was for a friend and it had the full guts from a genuine SG in it. As I say there are so many types and styles and for that price you can probably get something specially built to your specifications... If you have anything particular in mind give me a shout or if you're just after something simple I'm sure you're about to get quite a lot of offers from guys who have a few in stock :)
There are a few very good instructional videos on youtube. Chickenbonejohn has a good few videos of some very good blues tunes and of course Mr. Shane Speals youtube channel has all sorts of cracking videos for begginers through to intermediate skill levels. Also keni lee burgess has many many vids up and includes tablatures in many of the videos.. There's a lot out there but you so sometimes have to wade through the bits that aren't relevant. Hope that helps.
"Stick in a box" isn't such a bad starting point because that's what CBGs were all about originally. Depends which camp you want to gravitate to. "Lo-Fi - it looks like a pile of crap but in the right hands sounds f*****g amazing" or "I want something that looks like a cigarbox guitar but it has to play and sound like a Les Paul" (In which case by a cheapo Chinese LP copy for your £100)
Personally I like the Lo-Fi approach. The whole point of CBG is not to be too "precious" about it. It's meant to be fun, down and dirty and simple. Why not have a go at building your own first. You'll get a lot of pleasure from doing that and it's great when you string it up and get a few notes out of it and you know you made it. It'll cost you about £20 to make and you can then go on to build an even better one. Whatever you decide, don't get too hung up on the "spec". Keep it simple and above all don't take it too seriously - have fun.
Totally in the Smojo camp on this one. Don't forget what CBGs are all about - rough, handmade instruments fashioned out of the sort of crap you have laying around in yer shed. As Smojo says, they're meant to sound a bit 'earthy' - if you want a Gibson, buy a Gibson. If you want hours of raw fun (and to impress all your guitar worshipping muso friends!) get building a CBG for the good side of £35. You can spend the the other £65 on beer and curry......what's not to like?!
Have you considered attending a Chick BoneJohn workshop, you get to build you own for around £35.00. i attended one they are very good.
Thanks for the name check David. Making your own at my "Make & Play" workshops is an option..at the moment there isn't one scheduled for your area...get in touch and I can do something about that. This is what you end up making..clip from one of my workshop introductions.
Thanks everybody for your input , got myself a cheapy , still sounds good , hoping now Chickenbone John can sort us out a workshop over here in Suffolk ,
cheers Dave
