Can a box be too shallow?

Started by Sean Murphy. Last reply by Raymond Grimmitt Dec 21, 2021. 3 Replies

I picked up two boxes for my first couple of attempts at CBG's; finished the first and I'm getting ready to start the second. The box I got is nice and long, but it's a bit shallow - only 2" deep. I feel like it'll be an interesting build but I'm…Continue

Removing box labels

My first cigar box is on the way, and it's a paper-covered wood one. As cool as the label might be, I'd rather have a plain wood box, so I can customize it to my liking...is there a set method of removing these labels, without ruining the wood…Continue

Hey Everyone!!I am planning on building my first CBG in the near future, and am looking for some suggestions on the best way/easiest way that you have found to notch out the neck? I must admit that I possess very rudimentary "woodworking" skills,…Continue

your right, took to much off at the box. and as far as the strings go idk the gauges, i used some old strings that i never threw away. one of my plain string is actually about the same gauge as the one wound string im using. i can fret notes but it kinda hurts my fingers, but all in all i think it sounds pretty good cause i cant seem to put the thing down(im driving my girlfriend mad)new neck and properly gauged strings should fix the problem, but what the hell i think ill build a new one. heck my bandmates are asking me to build them one

wow!  Jeff, I don't know, either bad wood, or something else is going on.  what gauge strings and what's did you tune it to...  Are you sure it's bowing under tension, or was the bow press set?  Also is it bending right at the box?  I know what you said, but double check.... if you took off too much at the box, it could break down there, doubtful, but possible....

Sometimes when there is a little pre-warpping in a neck (no tension) then when you add string tension, it will go wild... if you need to sand off a warp, it's generally better to sand off the belly side (high point in the middle of the neck) so that your neck while level, will be prestressed against the string tension.

its a 3 string, 24 3/4 inch scale. the grain is not perpindicular to finger board. kinda runs at 30 degree angle. its a 1 by 2 and i didnt do any rounding or finishing

Mike,

I"m glad it worked for you.  Three years ago when the community was 5% the size it is today, I basically had to figure a lot of this stuff out.  I was well into my 50th build before I figured out how to "deck" / plane a neck...not that the community at that time wouldn't have answered the question, but I didn't even know what to ask. ;-(

Today there is so much wealth of tips archived, if you can figure out what to search, you can find the answer, ... still, there are plenty of guys willing to work on solutions to "problems", even if it's been asked and answered a dozen times before.

the best,

Sam, I have put your neck sanding tips into action, re surfaced one that was done to get rid of a 2nd marker buzz, then fine tuned 4 more before fitting them to box's. Makes lots of fine dust but the end result is worth the extra effort.  I used some really good mounting tape to tape down teh 80 grit belt to a portable drafting table top.   Tip of the day, flatten your neck before you put it in the box!

hmmm, generally you prefer the neck to be cross grain to the pull of the strings...

?'s..... how many strings, what dimensions neck stock and how much thinning did you do in shaping the neck.  I have never had oak bow under string tension for 3 or 4 string CBGs unless the wood of defective or was extremely thinned during shaping.

the best,

i just finished my first cbg. i have a brass bolt nut nut and eyebolt bridge. my neck is red oak. my problem is very high string action around the middle point of the neck and it is because it is bowing. what should i be looking for in regards to the grain of the wood?

I have to agree with Sam on the flat neck thing. I made a bunch of necks before christmas so I could fit them to the box's when I have time. I may have rushed some and am finding I have to go back and plane the face of them flat, then refinish them. Even with fretless its better to have a flat neck for those times when you want to fret a note and not just use a slide.
