Soon I will start posting some of the tips and insights about writings songs for the commercial market that I have learned along the way. Including what I learned while mentoring under Legendary Songwriter Jack Keller! Most of what I'll be covering can be seen in the "How to Write a Song" section of Songwriter Nation! It all starts with the "Hook"!
Now this is "Commercially" speaking...but....if you don't have a Hook, you don't have a Song!!
The "Hook" is that memorable part of the song that the listener knows and can repeat after one hearing....it is almost always the title but in some cases not...regardless,"memorable" is the key word!
So that is your starting point for writing a "HIT SONG"!!

Howdy folks,
I write some songs. I don't have much originality in verse or (especially) tune, but I play at it. It's pretty hard to write an entirely original tune. Most sound like something else. I will post a recent video of a song in a blues tradition using 3 chords, the first line done twice and followed by a line ending in a rhyme.

For the songwriter who wants to take his songwriting to the next level. Songwriting is a craft, and just like CBG building, one can improve at their craft through study and practice! Great songwriters aren't just born blessed with the ability, they work hard at it. The secret is in the re-writing...hence the insightful saying "Good songs are written, GREAT songs are RE-written"! I first heard this quote from friend and mentor, the legendary Jack Keller!
Inspired by CBN and other social networking sites for hobbyists and enthusiasts, and the nuturing environment they can be. A new site has been created for songwriting enthusiasts, and it's called of all things "Song Writer Nation"! http://www.songwriternation.com/ Just a visit to the site and clicking on "How to write a song" will open a wealth of information that took years to compile and is offered absolutely free. In it's earliest stages of infancy, this is an oppurtunity to become a founding member of what is hoped to be a bustling hub of activity for songwriting and tunesmithing lovers.
Headquartered out of Nashville, Tennessee, Music City U.S.A., the Songwriting capitol of the world, the hope is that it will be a place to share, promote and network, and hone our skills at the craft of songwriting.
And meanwhile right here at CBN, let's hear your song or your story about
about songwriting!
