There is an old myth about pickups and ohms. Though I understand the misunderstanding of higher ohms equals a hotter pickup. You take an electrical meter, measuring the ohm of a pickup, the numbers…Continue

What is the best quality coils out there? Stewmac has coils but they were too expensive, so I took a ride with cheap alternatives and was not disappointed. My findings are that coils made by…Continue

I have tried a couple and they come out extremely bright and harsh. Is there a way to warm them up?Continue

I took apart a transformer and found a great quantity of wire...but it is thicker than the 42 gauge everyone recommends...seems to be about twice as thick...I know I won't get as many winds if I use a standard bobbin...but could I use this if I made my own and allowed more space for the extra winds needed?
thanks for the info...i will let you know how things go
I've taken apart a hard drive and seen those too. Kind of a boomerang shape. My suggestion would be to make a P-90 type pickup. You would make a coil with ferrous (iron) pole pieces. In other words, something that a magnet would stick to. Then place the magnet at the bottom touching the pole pieces. The magnetic field will carry up to through the pole pieces to the strings.
The magnets are neodymium and on the larger side, so they would be pretty powerful. If they're too much, you might need to place the pickup farther from the strings than normal, maybe even hidden inside the box could work.
i have 2 really stront magnets from an old mac hard drive...can these be used to make a pickup? they are a weird shape, am wondering if that will be a problem when winding
Perfect!
Thanks for the info, Skeesix. Greatly appreciated!
If I'm visualizing things correctly, yes, the magnets may want to repel each other. They should all either be north up or south up. What I do in that situation is epoxy them on one at a time. Wait until the glue sets on the first one before adding the next one and so on.
Quick scenario.
I'm building a wall wart pickup like this:
Because the center hole in the bobbin is more square than long, I have to push the magnets very close in order to align them to the pole posts. Given their orientation they want to repel one another.
Is this correct?
Thanks in advance!
This is a good page which explains it:http://behindthetone.com/johnfisher/counter/count.htm
However, I wouldn't bother with a calculator for a Lollar style winder, as it will wind too fast for it to count. I ended up using a Red Lion Cub counter which works great.
I'm not an electronic guru, could you explain how you wired up the calculator and how is it all hooked up so it counts the rpm? I bought a Lollar book on making pickup winders and I'm almost finished with it except for the counter.
Great winder - what kind of motor is that? I imagine the rpms would have to be on the low side for the counter to work.
Wire gauge looks like it's on the thicker side - 36 gauge or so? Not sure what the equivalent is in the UK without looking it up.
