I thought it'd be a great idea to put the latest albums up from the artists playing at Bluesfest - so those of you lucky enough to go can check out what you want to see. And for those of you overseas who, I'm sure, will be extremely jealous. So…Continue

VA – Which Way Does the Blood River Flow? (2013)
Compilation of some of the best songs recorded for the Testament label between 1961 and 1967.
Mostly recorded in the south by aging players who never would have gotten their due, had the label not gone out of their way to capture them in these years. The assortment of tracks is really well-chosen – and most of the work is very rootsy and acoustic – with guitar and vocals as the core elements that drive the sound throughout.
Here we have the deep spirituals of Fred and Annie McDowell, the haunting music of Peg Leg Howell, the long form lonesome blues of Skip James contemporary Jack Owens, the pretty drifting tunes of Elijah Brown and the plaintive ballads of Jimmie Tarlton. No filler allowed – just the heaviest stuff Mississippi Records could find.
A co-release with Sutro Park, the king of all contemporary blues reissue labels. Limited edition vinyl of 2,000 copies.
1. Elijah Brown – Pearline
2. Fred McDowell – Amazing Grace
3. Eddie Lee Jones – She’s Mine, She’s Your’s
4. Jack Owens – Jack Ain’t Had No Water

6. Peg Leg Howell – Blood Red River
7. Fred McDowell – Get Right Church
8. Elijah Brown – Windin’ Ball

8 Ball Aitken is the redneck preacher at the shotgun wedding between country and blues. It doesn’t matter which part of the family you’re from — what does matter is the funky foot-stomping hullaballoo at the all-night party afterwards.Hailing from Far North Queensland, Australia (now Nashville based), he grew up as a teenager in a run-down tobacco shed, making a living picking tropical fruits by day and picking guitars by night. 8 Ball’s first break came when he was hired to play nightly at the infamous Johno’s Blues Bar in Cairns.
8 Ball’s had several award wins for both country and blues music including a Southern Star Award and two Queensland Song Awards (for ‘Outback Booty Call’ & ‘Yellow Moon’). His singles ‘Rogue Pony’, ‘Cyclone Country’ & ‘Hands On Top Of The Wheel’ have all been top 10 country chart hits around Australia. 8 Ball has also had Golden Guitar and APRA award nominations for songs he has written. His fourth album ‘The Tamworth Tapes’ went to number 2 for a month on the Australian blues & roots national chart.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds – Live from KCRW (2013)
While shell-shocked fans recover from Nick Cave’s recent live shows – pounding Old Testament fucks of thunder and high drama that have seen the re-modeled Bad Seeds at their absolute peak – there’s another side to the dark overlord of which we perhaps need reminding. Away from the stage-stalking, crotch-in-the-face thrashes of black lightning that have struck both theatres and festivals over the last year there’s an aspect to Cave’s work that deals more in sadness and romance than violence and sex, expresses the subtleties of pain over the grandiosity of tragedy. It’s the aspect of the artist you’ll remember from The Boatman’s Call and No More Shall We Part, a bruised black flower writhing among the thorns of an emotional rose bushes of his own making.
Here on this almost ‘unplugged’ collection captured live in California in April of this year we get a prime, breathing example of this incarnation.

VA – New Orleans: Gris Gris (2013)
There is only one complaint against this collection of stellar sides by legendary New Orleans musicians: the title is pure jive. A gaze at the track list reveals that this is simply a stone-cold compilation of classic New Orleans R&B, soul, and blues. Even opener “Zu Zu Man” by Dr. John has more to do with swamp blues than it does voodoo.
That aside, while any serious fan of NOLA music more than likely has most of these 40 cuts — spread here over 2 discs — hearing them sequenced like this makes for one singular party mix. For anyone who has had only the slightest of introduction to the profound sounds of the Crescent City, this comp, for the money, simply cannot be beat, with tracks from the Meters, Eddie Bo, Clarence “Frogman” Henry, Slim Harpo, Robert Parker, Barbara Lynn, Chris Kenner, Irma Thomas, Lee Dorsey, Huey “Piano” Smith, Fats Domino, Allen Toussaint, and on and on. This set is all killer, no filler.

Eric Clapton – Live In Basel 2013 (2013)
Eric Clapton and His Band are wrapping up their 2013 concerts this month with two shows in Basel, Switzerland. The shows are part of the “Baloise Sessions” indoor concert series and happen at the Event Halle in Basel. In front of 1,500 people, Eric and his band peformed a 20-song set on 13 November, including five songs in memory of JJ Cale: “Don’t Go To Strangers” (the opening number), “Since You Said Goodbye,” After Midnight,” “Call Me The Breeze” and “Cocaine.” “After Midnight,” rarely seen in a Clapton set list, was performed in the style of JJ Cale, rather than the way it had been recorded in the studio by Eric (in 1970 and 1987). The seated acoustic portion of the evening was limited to four songs, a bit shorter than the May/June concerts. The acoustic songs at this concert were “Driftin’,” “Nobody Knows You When You’re Down And Out,” “Goodnight Irene,” and “Layla”.

Royal Southern Brotherhood ‘Songs From the Road’ cements their place as one of the most essential live experiences in 2013. From their self titled debut album to their incendiary live shows, it’s been a long time since a band packed so much musical talent and more importantly fulfilled its potential.Fronted by the charismatic Cyril Neville on vocals and feverish percussion and powered by brilliant rhythm section of Yonrico Scott and Charlie Wooten on bass, they offer an open invitation for the guitarist and award wining songwriter Mike Zito to cut lose in the company of his long term buddy Devon Allman.
