I thought it'd be a great idea to put the latest albums up from the artists playing at Bluesfest - so those of you lucky enough to go can check out what you want to see. And for those of you overseas who, I'm sure, will be extremely jealous. So…Continue

Claude Hay – I Love Hate You (2013)
FOR ANYONE IN MY NECK OF THE WOODS - GET ON DOWN TO THE BLUES ON BROADBEACH FESTIVAL AND CHECK OUT CLAUD HAY. SAW IN THE LOCAL RAG TODAY THAT HE'S FEATURING HIS NEW BUILD, MADE FROM A $7 BAKING TRAY.
Blues players have come from many places but probably only one has originated in the Blue Mountains near Sydney, Australia, which brings us to Claude Hay. He is a one-man music machine as he plays just about every instrument on his albums and in concert. He is proficient on the slide guitar, sitar, bass, and drums and is able to combine them into sophisticated music to support his compositions. He even takes it a step further as he built his own double-neck guitar. He is, at his core, a blues artist but now extends his sound in a hard rock direction and every once in a while adds in some funk rhythms. He has just released his third studio album, I Love Hate You. His music has continued to evolve. The lyrics have become more sophisticated with the passage of time and his guitar improvisations and riffing are more prominent. He was influenced by many rock and blues artists of the 1980s and those influences are beginning to show through a harder edge. Through it all his slide guitar carries the sound.
As the album title implies, the lyrics explore such topics as love, great performances, transportation problems, terrible customer service, and even issues with radio programmers, all of which fit the love and hate theme of the album.
The album begins with the title track and rocks right out of the gate as he expresses his feelings about people, both positive and negative. “Close” travels in a different direction as it is a laid-back track that meanders along. Tracks such as “Stone Face,” “Blues Train,” “Narrow Mind,” and “Hound” all contain his unique brand of blues and rock.
The only non-original track is a cover of The Beatles’ “Come Together.” He energetically rolls though the song with some fine guitar work that moves the performance in a blues direction.
Claude Hay is a noted blues musician in his home country of Australia and has been gaining attention in the United States. I Love Hate You is a fine album that will only enhance that reputation. If you like your blues with a hard edge, then this will be an album for you.

Debashish Bhattacharya – Beyond the Ragasphere (2013)
Here is a boldly original fusion experiment from the virtuoso Indian instrumentalist who designed his own slide guitars so they could match the intricacies of the sitar. Now, Debashish Bhattacharya has expanded his range with a set that includes vocal work from his teenage daughter, Anandi, tabla players who worked with Ravi Shankar, and collaborations with very different guitarists from around the world. There’s an India-flamenco clash with Spanish guitarist Adam del Monte on Indospaniola, and a swinging workout with the US bluegrass dobro star Jerry Douglas on JD2 Pillusion. Best of all, despite its rather twee title, is A Mystical Morning, an inspired 16-minute workout in which he trades guitar lines with the great John McLaughlin, who famously explored Indian styles with the Mahavishnu Orchestra and Shakti in the 1970s. They ought to record a full album together. — guardian
Kim Salmon & Spencer P.Jones – Runaways (2013)
Australian rock and roll veterans Kim Salmon (The Scientists) and Spencer P Jones (Beasts of Bourbon and Paul Kelly & the Coloured Girls) will soon release their first, and perhaps only, album Runaways, due out this Friday, 15th February.
The beginnings of Runaways date back to early 2012 when Salmon and Jones played together at grimy rock stalwart The Old Bar in Melbourne for a month-long residency. During their tenure, the duo developed an assortment of covers both classic, like I Need Somebody by The Stooges, and modern, a la Runaway by Kanye West. The pair also wrote a handful of originals, including bluesy lead single A Bitter Projection, which would go on to form the backbone of Runaways.
The Mason Rack Band - Show Me Yours (2006)
"These guys are the next real thing , they work hard and surf hard"

His stage performance is an experience in itself. With more than 2000 shows performed including major music festivals throughout Australia and Canada, the musician shows no signs of slowing down. The raspy vocals of lead frontman Mason Rack have been described by fans as one on the sexiest voices in the blues music scene with flashes from Tom Waits and Led Zeppelin.
His influences include: Tom Waits, Tex Perkins, Jeff Buckley, Ben Harper, Violent Femmes, Dave Mathews, Rolling Stones, old blues masters, etc. Songwriter/performer Mason Rack is a natural entertainer, from a tapestry of slide guitar, deep broken glass vocals and story fuelled blues rock. The Mason Rack Band - Night Train (2009)
MRB debut CD featuring a selection of timeless Blues songs. Classic Stones, Van Morrison, Bo Didley, BB King and many more. Great collection brought to life in a way only the Mason Rack Band can.
Originating from the Gold Coast in Queensland, Mason Rack Band is not afraid to break all the musical genre rules. The bands new album Limits of Grip does just that, flaunting expectation by combining a classic mix of heavy rock, blues, jazz and roots .
Known for a swampy blues / rock sound the band influences include flashes of Tom Waits, and Muddy Waters with roots extending to Ben Harper. Throw in a slide guitar, raspy vocals, a rocking bluesy bass, massive drum percussion and the result is a spectacular kaleidoscope of musical genres.
The popular three piece is renowned for their amazing live stage performances. The band has played alongside artists including Xavier Rudd, Jack Johnson, Buddy Guy and Keith Urban to name a few.
The Mason Rack Band - Limits Of Grip (2011)
Australia power-blues trio the Mason Rack band shows their diversity on their second studio CD “Limit of Grip.”
Rack, who is known for his Tom Waits gravelly growl and his scorching guitar, shows he can also play with taste and feel and enrapture an audience with just his voice on the opening track “Hard Goodbye.”
It is a surprisingly a slower number with a deadly, slinky bassline and Rack almost rapping, telling stories in something that almost sounds like Beat poetry.
It also shows off his lyrical depth as do a lot of his songs, featuring his unusual stream of consciousness thoughts.
The second track, “Purple and Blue,” is a return to form — an upbeat, massive riffed blues rocker.
He shows some reggae and pop on “Mankind,” starting it off with a groovy reggae vibe, and couple horns in the background adding some jazz.
He picks up the tempo midway through the song, then speeds up the beat into more of a jazzy/ blues groove, not to mention a drum solo.
He growls “ you won’t be hearing this song on the radio. You won’t be hearing this song on MTV.”
Well it’s radio and MTV’s loss.
While the CD starts with a string of big, beautiful blues rockers, he shows his ’80s metal side on “Dare Me To.”
I love the lyrics of the slower “In That Order,” and “In A Can” is reminiscent of “Sweet Home Chicago.”
“Dead Of Night,” also has that classic blues feel, but a lot darker.
A couple of the songs, “Beast” an “90 Days” have appeared on some of his other CDs and re-appear here, beefed up and re-recorded. ~Review by Richard Amery, L.A. Beat Editor

Greg 'Stackhouse' Prevost - Mississippi Murderer (2012)
Singer, songwriter, and guitarist Greg Prevost has been kicking around on the fringes of the rock 'n' roll mainstream for better than three decades now. Best-known for his legendary Rochester, New York garage-rock outfit the Chesterfield Kings, who have released right around a dozen red-hot slabs o' Voxx-fired, fuzz-toned rock since their 1983 debut Here Are The Chesterfield Kings, Prevost is also a fanatical record collector and music historian. His insightful and informative articles on 1960s and '70s era bands can be found in small press publications like Ugly Things and Shindig! which document the obscure and the overlooked of rock music...
