Bubba, theres a discussion in Teds Mad Scientist group that has a file for printing out your own templates, or use the link to stewmacs fret calculator

Hey what do you call a string instrument with a shorter than violin scale length?
I accidentally made a dulcimer with 315mm scale length and dunno what to call it.

27.3 inches is my favorite scale length these days. I borrowed it from a cello scale length and as a firend of mine would say at this point - Chelloooo??
Kind of looks weird unless used on a long enough CB, but give it a go - sounds really mellow and makes some real nice dulcimer tones....

Hi Ben, thanks for the invitation! I don't like Fender or Gibson scale lenght, both aren't much comfortable for me (on my strat, I made some adjustments on the shape of neck to fit better on my hand, and to compensate their large lenght - that neck were from another strat and the scale lenght is 26"!). Now, the playability and intonation are (almost) perfect. On my builds I tend to use a shorter scale lenght (my hands are "medium to small" size), 23,5" to 24" is fine to me (my tenor is 19" and is a very pleasant guitar to play).

i have no real preference i just go with what ever mood i am in at the time and then choose string gauges accordingly

Hey guys,
Thanks for joining and adding your views. I'm hoping newbies will stop by here before posting the same question over and over on the main page forum. (Ben), I know what you're saying with the short scale. I waffle back and forth a bit. Shorter is faster but I like to get a bit dramatic sometimes with a good long distance slide between notes.

Threes a crowd :o)
I prefer a shorter scale on sliders. Dont know why, but I find Fender and Gibson scales far too big - maybe Im just getting lazy and dont want to move my hand so much... lol
I think a lot depends on if you play only cbgs, or if you alternate with a 'normal' git at all. Prolly if I played both much I want the scale the same

Then there were two.

I use either 24" scale (Fender Mustang) or I use 25.5" (Fender Telecaster) as the guitars I normally build are for my son who loves his '66 Mustang.
It is much lighter than the telecaster but I think the scale on a tele is just about right. The 24" scale is just a nice size for a CBG as it keeps it that bit smaller.
Also with these two scales, as they are standard, you can tune your strings easily and also have a fair degree of tolerance on them for changing the tuning without too many problems.
