Comment by wormil on January 16, 2013 at 1:43pm Use a fret calculator just like you would for a guitar. The downside of nylon strings is they go out of tune in a heartbeat.
Comment by Marcus P. Clarke on January 15, 2013 at 6:45pm I have built about 100 CBG's and thought to branch out and build a baritone uke. I would like the longest scale at about 20". I will be using the DGBE strings but my question is finding the fret positions. Also wondering if I should use nylon strings. I plan on using a disc piezo at the bridge. Any thoughts ?

Soprano - 13"
Concert - 15"
Grand Concert - 16" ( I have a Kamoa in this scale)
Tenor - 17"
Baritone -19"/20"
I guess you could build an 18" scale and call it a "Grand Tenor", but most (real) ukulele builders seem to be pretty anal about what is "standard" Glad us CBGer's are more open to "No Rules".
Comment by wormil on January 12, 2013 at 6:13pm Rooster go here:
http://www.harpkit.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=...
Type in 17, click calculate
Go here to convert decimals to fractions
http://www.championscrew.com/fractions.htm
OR use fret2find and print it out, no thinking necessary
Comment by Rooster Reaves on January 12, 2013 at 2:47pm Dose any body got the scale length in english for a tenor uke.
I'm not the swiftest on numbers so if Y'all could read it off by a tape measure
that would be cool.

go to Fret calculator http://www.stewmac.com/FretCalculator
in "number for frets" box put in "24" (You won't need that many, but better too many.
In "Scale Length" box insert your desired scale length in milimeters
select "milimeters" from the radio buttons
select "dulcimer" from instrument drop down menu
hit "calculate" button.
You will get a table with fret positions calculated in xx.xxx, one column from nut and one column from fret to fret. Use the column "from nut" and mark your fretboard to nearest 1/2 mm.
Your on your way. make sure to post pictures, progress and questions.
the best,
Wichita Sam
Comment by Bob Lumpkin on April 21, 2012 at 4:09pm Stewart MacDonald (StuMac.com) has the easiest fret caculator I've ever used. I guess you all knew that, oh well. I found a 28" Dulicmer scale I couldn't find elsewhere. Good building.
