I agree aluminum is the best it flexes and acts more like a speaker. I have used steel pot lids which some have a nice ring to them but aluminum is the way to go!!

i am going to try the two dowel neck,on my baby reso and the neck angle will be adjustable with a floating brace that the end of the neck will attach to. its simple in design[will have pics of this feature] the can will float also, it will set on quarter inch dowels that go through the body on the sides only. i have used this floating can feature on dowels on a tri-can resonator. the can is a black olive can for the baby reso. cant wait to see how loud i can make it since it will be a baby reso in size. my first reso was a tuna can setting on an inverted 6 inch automotive speaker frame. i removed the maganet and the opening of the can matched with the speaker frame perfectly so it was metal to metal, and it was loud for an 8x10 box.the widest part of the speaker frame was bolted to the back of the guitar but i put in spacers so the frame of the speaker would not touch the back of the guitar, this also made the overall height of the can-frame configuration just right for the string height and neck angle. it all worked out well on my first cigarbox guitar resonator. and it was loud, maybe the metal in the speaker frame helped act as an extension of the can, to project that much volume. the can was aluminum also and i already think that aluminum is louder than iron. past experiments with tuna cans have proved that fact to me anyway. all right must get busy building so stay tuned to this channel for more up-dates and great opportunities from many reso-brain-oriented thinkers, there is no doubt in my mind there will be many. and also lots to learn.

nah i havent even made one yet i just messed up the paint job. ive made coffee can one string sliders, paint can basses etc. elmore james made a slider from a lardcan and a broomstick, described as a variant on the washtub bass. it was said to have two or three strings. my guess is it was a two stringer. he did play a broomwire on his cabin wall, but a broom wire would cave the lid in. so im guessing screen wire or old guitar strings. im basing mine on this, http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2108/2179159036_6a3935b094.jpg?v=0

i make tumbis and prefer no nut at all i also mess around with buzz bridges, i make tanpuras. ive played with the banjo guy in the 1792 liberty celebrating the arts and sciences painting and i can see a rib bone bridge. the photo of robert johnson shows him with a rib bone stuck under his strings as a capo this would act like a sitar bridge giving him a reso sound on hot tamales. redog has a pic of an akonting player with a bone buzz nut. so im using a rib bone bridge but i dont know if elmore james had one. heres more pics http://images.google.com/images?um=1&hl=en&safe=off&q=Endingidi&btnG=Search+Images
but i really dont think anyone is interested in the simple things i do.

you can do thought the body, just ark the neck away from the lid. i use any big box that a can will fit in, or use a small can. Ive been finding the lid with the can makes a great sound well and you can play wit different lids to change the sound. also you can dome or bow the lid by rubbing it with a rounded stick and a little oil so it dosent heat up to much, witch is a great way to make cover plates for dog bowl resonators by the way. id say take the idea and run with it
oh but seal the can at the bottom and the lid real tight to you'll get a bad buzz, and yes that is the first time i have ever mad reference to a "bad buzz" let me know how it goes

Hello Billy,
I'd love to see and hear one of your resos sounds i like youve done a few.

i use a repro lard can no holes check with dr oakroot you only need one 3/8" hole i know big holey guitars with grommets look cool but it actually makes the sound worse. i used the foxfore fire cookie tin banjo as a model the sound board is on the lid. cookie tin instruments ive seen use the bottom. the bottom has an inferior ring because its not one stamped peice and is welded. my sound leaves through the crack about the rim and through cracks where the broom stick goes through. theres no sound deadening fillers or glue. if you make an electric instrument you have a 3/8" hole in the plug hole so no holes are necessary. steel string is the loudest a bone bridge and bone nut will also make things louder. i would like to have a quartz chrystal slide made because it has amplification properties, but cant afford it. amps telephones tvs will not work without quartz. you can play music with a wet finger on a crystal glass but not a sand glass. an opera singer can vibrate chrystal glasses and break them but not the windows in the house. black river rock is ringing rock granite/lava glass and quartz is inside them. but the resonator should ring like a bell it shouldnt sound dull, the top of a cookie tin rings nice the bottom doesnt. tin, brass, aluminum sound nice iron doesnt its dull and clunky like a cow bell. the wood in your neck should also ring, ash rings like a bell when you drop it on the concrete. if the wood clunks when you drop it and doesnt sound like a chime dont use it.
