Hi All, Quick update on my D/Bow, 1/2 hour build time (incl piezo) was cool for a while but I had a shop bought single coil p/up that ended up side mounted to the board. Once I get round to earthing the bastard it'll be time to make some evil noise (cue evil pirate laugh)

Joker-

I realize that on my computer screen at work the aspect ratio of the pictures is extremely tall and narrow, which is why I made the comment about the short fat diddley bow. They look normal on my computer at home--I thought everyone could see the joke, but it looks like the joke's on me! My apologies!

Hi WillardJ-

It is on my to-do list to write an article about making your own electromagnetic pickups for Uncle Enos and for my website.

I have made my own electromagnetic pickups by winding #42 magnet wire on a plastic sewing machine bobbin and inserting a rare-earth magnet in the hole to get a single-pole pickup.

Ted Crocker also made me two pickups that are very nice, and I used one of them at Huntsville. These pickups, as well as my own home-grown ones, attach to the diddley bow using two rubber bands joined into a figure 8, and then looped underneath the body of the diddley bow to attach to two pegs on each end of the pickup. This way they can be switched from instrument to instrument relatively quickly.

Cooper-Moore uses the wire from the inside of an old A/C adapter (the heavy ones). Inside the adapter is a transformer. I cut through the core and the secondary coil (the one that is not attached to the wall-plug) with a hacksaw, knocked it out of the transformer bobbin, and used the coil as-is with a radio shack magnet. Cooper-Moore actually unwound the wire from the primary coil and wrapped it around a magnet (presumably covered with tape). I have not tried this yet, because I have a good-sized spool of #42 magnet wire and I don't think the primary coil wire is as thin.
