Any suggestions on side marker material? Something like standard dots used on most guitars? Something not found in StewMac or other luthier stores [read: something cheap and readily available]

Perhaps one of the Great Names in the field, Keni Lee Burgess, can answer that best:

So, I 'm getting ready to string up my first cigar box guitar! Took me awhile, but I should have her finished in a couple days. Was curious to know how to tune it up and what gauges of strings to use. Its going to be a four string, I'm assuming that I would just take the 5th, 4th, 3rd, & 2nd string of a 6 string acoustic guitar set? Any help would be appreciated!

They make decent frets. Atleast thats what I used for my first freted CBG anyway. Hell they were laying right there on the bench, so thats what I used

embarrassingly easy. thanks for the tips. It seems like the nail part might make good frets.

It certainly is a puzzle, Craig trying to get it apart for the first time. But once you tap the nail end with a hammer, it comes off, very easy.

Craig, if you have a hammer and pliers, hold the shaft of the pop rivet lightly with the pliers so the nail end is up and gently tap the nail end with a hammer. It doesn't take much of a tap. Holding the pop rivet by the shaft will prevent any damage to the visible part.
