You could redrill. If you grind a small flat spot and use a center punch. However the trick is to keep it centered all the way through the post. Id rather try this in a small vise in a drill press though.

Alan,

I have redrilled tuner posts, but, it's a challenge.... if the holes are too high... and you have sufficient post height just wind a longer length of guitar string down the post....

redrilling tuner pins sounds like trouble. Drilling into any hard curved surface would be a challenge. Have you done a search for "string tree" in the box in the upper left?

The gap between string and fret is the action. If you play slide, you want a high action, otherwise something lower. How do you play?

Guys, would it help to re-drill the cross-hole lower on the tuner pin to pull the string down on the nut a little more, even with a flat headstock? Not sure how hard the pins are to drill, but it seems like there's room to drop that hole. While I'm at it, as I put the string grooves in the nut (and bridge), how much gap should I be aiming for between the strings & frets?

Wichita Sam says to flatten the top, and that would be the easier (safest) thing to do. No question. However... you could add more to the back, and shave it down with a block plane so the top and bottom are parallel. That would be more work.

I do LOVE W.S.'s "plus 2" rule. I will add that to my stone tablets.

Howling Dick,

A common mistake is to lay out a crowded headstock.... I'd suggest adding 2 inches to the number of tuners.... 3 tuners, plus 2 = 5 inches of headstock minimum....

your pic with tuners installed would be workable, by winding strings to the bottom of the tuner post, if the closest post didn't crowd the nut so much.... might work anyway, but would be sure if there was a little more room....

on the pic without the tuners installed, it you "flatten" the top of the head stock a little, it might work.... the entire headstock should be the same thickness overall to simplify tuner installation....

the best,

Wichita Sam
