Hrmmmm. I dunno. There may be a way to use this but if I were you, I would start out with a piezo. Go to Radio Shack and get a http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062402 and break the plastic case. Mount that in some hot glue near the bridge (or in the bridge if you can). Attach a mono 1/4" jack and you have a pickup. Not a magnetic pickup but a pickup none the less. If you wanna get some really good parts, hit CBGitty (Ben Baker) on the right and he'll hook you up. We also have schematics when you need that.

If you're gonna use a mag pup, get one cheap online and hook it up. Unless you want a custom/hand built pup, save your dough and get one online. BTW, there are a bunch of builders here that will wind pups for ya.

Ugh! Fretting is far beyond my current skills...although I slide exclusively now, so I may never need to fret again! LOL I would love to find a simple and comprehensive guide THAT'S FREE to consult.

be sure to level the neck/fretboard first, then cut fretlines, then install frets, then dress frets, including leveling, then install neck then string up and play.

If you install neck before you install frets, you lose the opportunity to make sure everything is level before installing the frets. If you try to install frets on a neck/fretboard that is wavy, YOU ARE DOOMED!!!!!!

first attempt to add a pickup worked very well, but the second time I tried fretting was a disaster. I don't know what happened, but there are so many frets buzzing, I just want to rip them all out and start over. I don't know where I went wrong, but it's very frustrating.

David -

Fretting can be intimidating, no mistake about that. It seems like just last month that I first tried my hand at it - but of course it's been over two years. The things I learned, and the mistakes I made, through my first attempts at fretting convinced me that a simple, down-to-earth introductory guide was needed to help the first-timer get started with simple, common tools instead of the expensive specialty tools StewMac and other sell. The result of that was my Fretting Guide, a 40-page how-to ebook full of hands on, straightforward instruction, color photos and diagrams, and guidance on where to turn for more info. My guide will has helped hundreds of people make their first fret job a successful one.

This guide is available on my website, www.cbgitty.com/cubecart/ in both a Downloadable PDF File and as a Shipped CD. Both versions have the same content, the downloadable one is just cheaper and you get it faster!

I also offer a more in-depth fretting guide, Dan Erlewine's "Fret Work Step-By-Step", First Edition, if you are looking for more advanced fretting how-to.

Best of luck with your fretting and building!

Thanks Ben, and I hope the wire works out too!! It is one of the operations I am a little nervious about, but I think I'll get it. Also I bought some corian off ebay, 3 buck shipped for 4 blanks. Prob a rip, but it was convenient!! My next thought/pruchase will be to electricify. By the way anyone have and thoughts about buiding a pickup from a plug in wall transformer coil??

James, I have an article that talks about some fretting basics that might be a good starting point for you. You can find it at: http://www.cbgitty.com/content/view/33/43/

James,

I would recommend building a seperate fretboard using 1/4" by 1 1/2 stock (maple or oak) using a scroll saw. check out youtubes by BackPorchMojo. Measure, cut and install using either a caul/press or a hardwood block and hammer.

the best,

Wichita Sam

markholt,

go to a home supply that sells kitchen cabinet tops and ask for some corian samples. These cut easilly with a bandsaw or scroll saw, are very easy to shape and look good....

the best,

Wichita Sam
