RL Kuhn, welcome! Post some photos of what you've already made. I'd love to see the short scale bass in particular.

Hey all,
Just joined although I've been checking the site for awhile. Been building ukes, short scale bass and some experimental stuff. Looking forward to learning more and sharing when I can.
Thanks.

Hi All.

Because some folks (like me) have problems finding cigar boxes, I thought it would be a good idea to start up a CBN group called 'Home Made Resonator Boxes 101' so people can talk about basic box building (and later on maybe some advanced box building). We could also discuss other box shapes beyond the familiar rectangular cigar box shapes. Other more advanced topics could include some related wood working techniques like spline miter joints and dove joints. If this is a topic that you might be interested in, I encourage your participation. Here's the link: 'Home Made Resonator Boxes 101'

Hi Dianne, Fitzhugh & MichaelS. Sorry to be out of the loop (because I'm living in China and the time difference). I like the ugly I-beam idea because it seems to add the least material inside the box - more open space, more resonator space. If the parts of the I-beam that extend out of the box could somehow be incorporated into the design of the heal, it might not look so bad. But, I agree, Michael's idea is the simplest. You can always build the neck back up. My last couple of necks were laminate builds as good material is hard to find in China, and after doing a couple I find building up a neck from 2'' by 1/4" boards make a lot of sense. You can cut the top board shorter for the head and the under-the-soundboard-part of the neck and reinforce those areas with a 4th board where you think you might need it. Here's a quick drawing of these ideas, maybe something you can use on future builds.

Fizhugh, where in the Bay Area are you from? I summer in the Bay Area (usually in San Ramon). -Rand.

Why did I think of complex things when there is such a totally simple and obvious solution? I honestly can't think why. Thanks MichaelS.

Dianne, I would go simple and just glue a piece the width of the neck and about 1/4" thick to the back. That should be enough to stiffen it up, the I beam is nice, but laminating another piece on the back may be simpler and it should be planty strong. 3/4" is as thin as I make my neck inside the box, now you know how thin is too thin. : )

image didn't show up, but it's on my photo page, or click the square where it should be.

I think this is what you mean (not at all to scale, of course).

It makes more sense than what I'd suggested. Takes the strength from Rand's idea and leaves the outside looking right. I don't show it, but if you can fit another block between the top (bottom in these images) and the neck inside the box it would really help. It could either mirror the blue block I show here or be like the angled piece in the previous image. Anyone else, please comment - it isn't like I know what I'm doing :) I'm just going on first principles.
