the concept makes sense but unless you have a really weak top, a block shouldnt be needed

That makes sense to me. now, if I set up my strings so they pull across a bridge, should I put a block under my bridge to keep it from putting pressure on the soundboard? does that make a lick a sense what I said there?

Yeah, all your doing is clearancing the neck where it would hit the lid of the box so the neck will fit in and the fingerboard will be atleast flush to the top surface of the box. In turn you remove a touch more neck material so the box top with resonate a little more freely

I'm putting together a "through the body" type neck guitar. I had read that you should cut out the section of the neck that the sound board would rest on so it can vibrate. Do yall know anything about that?

As a newbie, Im not quite sure what you man by that Murray, could you elucidate please?

I guess another possible advantage of a bolt for the nut and for the bridge is that one could change the string width, within reason, if there were a way to support the different string angle between the nut and the tuners...maybe some kind of string tree, or a post on a slotted plate to keep the bend away from the bolt-as-nut itself...
