I ended up using the Rocky patel 7yr box for that build, it came out ok for #2 but waiting on parts before i can finish it off and see how it sounds. The flying pug will be my next project. Probably use the same headstock design and may attempt using an old sink strainer for the sound hole. Just worried i'll mess up the box cutting such a large hole in the lid. Fingers crossed. Oh and i still need to stain or vanish the neck before stringing

Thanks Nick. That was essentially the first scarf joint ive managed to produce. Learnt alot from it so hopefully the next will be slightly better.

My only tip:  Staples in the joint, cut the head off and it won't slide around too much when you clamp it...

Simple question, would it be overkill to drill a couple of holes straight through and stick in a couple of dowels? I worry about the glue. Or should I just suck it up and stop worrying. LOL

Through the neck/joint? I dunno. I cant see it being a problem although you would most likely still need to clamp to compress the joint. Although dowels would definitely keep everything aligned nicely.

Dowels could help keep things aligned but don't really add strength. A decent wood glue will be stronger than the wood itself, fear not little buckaroos!

I have had great luck with wood dowels keeping the head stock from slipping when gluing.  it also looks pretty nice if you use  different wood as fr s contrast in wood color.  good luck on your builds!
