I'm having a tough time finding hardwood for necks here in Italy, just pine slabs. What kind of problems am I going to have and how can I build a git with a "temporary" neck until I can find some decent hardwood?

Ive strung it with light electric strings "ADG" open tuned to FCF. less than 1mm of bowing off the bat, I'll check it again for the next month. Light as hell, and nice feeling with a nice coat of beeswax.

Did Filbo work out for you?
Glad to see you got some wood for a neck. Looks like silver fir is not a bad choice. Here's a backgrounder on the native woods available in your area, from a German chemist working for BASF:

Permalink Reply by QGolden on April 6, 2012 at 8:48pm How about looking at second hand and used furniture stores? I can sometimes score a nice chunk of hardwood by buying an old hardwood table that is too damaged for the shopkeeper to sell.. Some table tops are better then a half inch (12mm) thick and square legs are up to 2 x 2. Can rip a few necks out of an old 4 legged table. I scored a nice 8 foot oak table from the outside back of a thrift store. When I spotted it and inquired about it, they said they were going to throw it out as it was too damaged for sale. I am still cutting pieces of 100 year old oak off of it for various projects.

Permalink Reply by Joe Surmuta on April 25, 2012 at 12:35pm I have the same problem in the Dominican Republic finding hard wood. I went to the hardware store and bought some pickaxe handles that were made of ash. They came rounded so I had to file down the top leaving the backside with the nice rounded shape it came with. It worked out pretty good for me.

for a neck or at least a finger board to laminat, good luck
