I have a Sitar, the method they use is a sort of whipping twine, tied in a complex knot system to hold the metal fret wire bit in place, but can be moved along the neck  a tad for different tunings etc. I did try tying one once but gave up, you really meed to be a Super Boy Scout to tie them knots, but it does work when it is installed..... If you are fingering chords etc, then proper fret wire is best, but cable wraps, or zip ties will suffice for slide playing.....

On my first build I used the stainless steel strips from old windshield wiper blades that I found outside any auto parts store in the trash. I got the idea from another successful builder who had made many cigarbox guitars with this method it works pretty well.
