I'm curious about your choice of Ashbory strings vs. UBass string (from RoadToad?)...  What I remember Ashbory's are messy to use and don't hold up very well....

Truth be known I'D placed my order with Largesound before I knew about Road Toad.
The ones I ordered are Italian call aquilla they are an inprovement on the original Ashbory. they are not supposed to be sticky and stabalize quicker. Will let you know when I get to the playing stage.

Nice to know about that source.  I'm a big fan of Road Toad.  I've used there strings on everything from super short scale (13") to "standard" scale (30") CBBasses.  The guy that runs it will build custom sets (both length and diameter and number of strings for very little extra over their standard ukeBass sets.

 

Think about doing a progress build blog or slide show, I'd love to see it.

When you built your super short scale 13" did you tune to standard EADG?

Dave,

 

It was a true low E, three string, frettless bass tuned EAD.  To achieve this low tuning, I used thick poly urethane chord similar to the strings that Road Toad sells.  It worked really well and was snatched up when I made the mistake of putting a price on it at a music festival.

I've built a few, I contacted Owen Holt of Road Toad about 4 years ago. I got rid of my Ashbory because of the silicone string problem then found out about Owen and the Polyurethane strings. I'll be interested to hear how the Aquilla work, I use them on my ukulele, they are really good strings for that purpose.

I've a bit of work to do on the building side before I can try out the Aquilla's.
I read a few reviews on the Largesound site all seem to agree they dont have the sticky feeling, dont need pre stretching, and the D and G string dont break. What was strange when I went into the Aquilla web page to get the technical details there was no mention of their Bass strings only their Uke strings.
