Fiddle String Diameter

Alls quiet here but I thought I might stir things up with a question. Does anyone know or know where to find the diameter of fiddle strings. I have been using fishing successfully for sometime now.…Continue

Fiddle neck angle

One of the most challenging things for me was getting a good angle on the neck. It's not like a regular CBG. You need a really good angle on the strings. Here's the simplest solution I could come up…Continue

Hi everybody, I wish I had found this site earlier as it would have helped me out. I just finished my first cigar box fiddle. I like to make things and to keep busy, I have made a varitey of diffrent instruments and have had fun doing it. Some one once told me that doing what you like keeps you young but the clock hasn't started running backwards for me yet. Let me know what you think of my latest build please. Thanks everybody

Hi everyone, I'm new to CB instruments but I've been playing guitar/banjo and fiddle for years. I was curious is anyone has built anything similar to the "Rawhide Violin", offered in the free plans section. I like the simplicity of the design, and I already have all the parts but I want to know how it plays before I start building it up. I wouldn't be using rawhide- just a well-built and similarly-sized cigar box- but everything else is about the same.

It also got me thinking about an unorthodox instrument- something that could be both bowed and plucked.

I was thinking that if I carved the bridge somewhere between curved and flat (the way bluegrass fiddlers often do) and kept the long, cello-like fingerboard that the "rawhide violin" plans suggest, the instrument might be playable both bowed like a cello/rebab/stick fiddle and plucked like a banjo or CBG.

Has anyone done something like this before? Any suggestions on making it work?

Thanks

Thanks Jon!  I'm not sure what other pics my wife took.  I'll see what she has.  The fiddle was actually made for another nation member, Cris Portillo Jr.

Beautiful work! I'd love some close up pics - I promised my daughter that if she practiced violin 3 times every week for a couple months I'd build her one. :)

The fishing line holds the rosin just fine.  The hard part is getting the fishing line to have an even spread with some good tension.

Cool, that's really what I was referring to. I'm a music teacher and it is like pulling teeth to get a crap horse-hair bow to hold the rosin. I was wondering about the fishing line.

Yes, they do.  And they sound better with a real bow.

Do they play?

The "Padron" is my 2nd fiddle and the "La Aroma" is my 3rd.  I don't know why I don't have any pics of my 1st.  The bows are made from my guitar neck scrap material and fishing line.
