Hello all,
I've always wanted a double bass instrument and not being able to afford one, I thought I'd experiment with a cigar box stand up bass. All recycled wood and machine heads with a disc pick up. The strings work O.K. but don't stay in tune for long. Perhaps 'weedwhacker strings might be a good idea when funds allow.

Built my first one like that. Works fine, no trussrod.

I'm about to build a bass. I'm usin' a Cuban Rejects box, and I've got two planks of poplar and a strip of red oak I'm gonna laminate for the neck, will I need a truss rod? It's gonna be 4 strings, fretless.

I just used a regular CBG neck. Oak 1x2.
I actually have yet to string it as a bass, been using it as a baritonish type dulcibox.

I guess that would be more of an electric upright bass.
I am also keeping an eye out for a 12 bottle wooden wine case.

In reality, if you're gonna put a piezo in it, you don't really need a bigger box. But I wouldn't do one without making as big as possible either.

I have been considering using 3 or 4 of the the biggest identical cigar boxes I could find and putting them together similar to my " dubble trubble" build.

Casey,

Another possibility for an upright bass body is a large old suit case. I don't remember the site but there is an example on the internet. I recently picked up a 1960's era large samsonite for this purpose.

Welcome Jeremiah,

A lot of us old bass players love 3/4 stringers because with power chords we can make a ton of music and have a much fatter sound than one note at a time...

let us see your build when it's done.

the best,

Why'd I never find this group before? :-)

Here's my home, I s'ppose! I am in th ebeginning of my 30 short-scale Bass project, right now.

Not that I haven't built a few little 3/4 string guitars up to this point. I play 'em like basses. :-)
