A friend wants me to build him a cigar box bass with a short neck. Shorter than the 34" scale length of his Pbass and use regular electric guitar bass strings, because that is what he is used to. I…Continue

Thinking about building a two-string bass and was wondering if anyone has tried building one with eye bolts as tuners? If so, what size did you use and how were they "placed" on the headstock?Continue

Comment by Corbie on February 20, 2012 at 5:42pm I'm not trying to reinvent the wheel.....I think that's sometimes overplayed. I'm looking for a halfway decent sound acoustically and leave room to amp up. The pictures don't do the box justice, it's a pretty cool chest. I hope to keep the rusty finish intact. The box itself has top and bottom thats not too thin or too thick. This will be a three stringer that I will experiment with string options. Mostly I would rather put more time in it than money. Keep it simple with a little style. As I get deeper here I'll update as I go with photos on my page. I keep a photo record of all my builds but I only post a few of them.

Comment by Yellowbelly Flatt on February 20, 2012 at 7:33am I'm glad that you've done your research and planning. Will you be augmenting the sound with electrical pickups etc?
Comment by Corbie on February 20, 2012 at 6:35am I'm researching this now. I found that Dennis Havlena has stuff up on the interweb that has been very helpful.. On my CBG 's I have learned to set the neck on slight angles to give ample room at the bridge. This project has a bridge at least a hands width.......this will need lots of forthought. I'm looking at all options till I pick out what I can use and make a mockup so I will make the least amount of mistakes. My most concerns are the rattles. I'm going to set my electric sander inside without sandpaper on the pad and see what's shaken.
Thanks for mentioning the neck angle, I want this piece to come out near right the first time.
Comment by Yellowbelly Flatt on February 20, 2012 at 5:37am This project really looks like a plan. Don't forget to get the neck angle correct.
Comment by Corbie on February 19, 2012 at 7:56pm Hi....I've been a newbie for a few months and just joined the Cigar Box Basses Group a week ago. I wanted to build a bass at some point after finishing up two 3-string punch boxes I started. I had read through all the post but had no immediate plans until I found this
18-1/2 x 13 x 8-1/2 steel box. working on a plan for a stand up bass.
I'm sure to ask questions further up the road.
