One - Two - Three - Four

Here's where we can work together to record some music. Anyone can participate, either adding a track or starting a new project. As always, there's no rules, but maybe to make it simple there should be some guidelines.

Obviously each project should be in a format that makes it easy for others to join in. Or not. Audacity is a Free, full featured music recording application available for Mac, PC and Linux which many members here use and can assist others with.

Some veterans may use more serious software that attracts more serious contributions. ProTools with a serious studio setup?

Let's make this a fun way for us to work together many miles apart.

All suggestions concerning how to make this easy and fun are welcome, and everyone is invited to join in. HAAAAA, if your track doesn't fit the song, it can always be deleted...

Well Nation, let's make some music together!

Shure SM57 comes up time and again in reviews for a decent, robust instrument mic. That's what I plumped for becuase it's well proven and if I decide to pack it all in, I know I can sell it again and get a good price. I bought brand new for about £90.

thanks for the replies ya'all.

Mark, there quite a few companies out there offering great mic's
at great prices. the Audio-Technica AT2041SP Studio Pack is great
deal at $169.00. it comes with a AT 2020 large diaphram condenser,
and an AT2041 small diaphram condenser. a good entry-level set of
mic's.both have a 20-20 frequency response and good SPL rating.
keep in mind,condenser mic's require fantom power.so if you're
interface dosen't have fantom power you'll need a stand-alone
FP supply, which can be had for starting around 30-40 dollars.

the Cascade FatHead, which is a dynamic ribbon mic is one of the
best deals out there IMHO. dynamic mic's don't require fantom power.
Cascade sells direct,so their prices are fantastic.
the FatHead has a figure8 polar pattern,so it picks up from both sides
of the mic, which can sound really sweet in a nice "live" sounding room.
you get whats directly in fronnt of the mic,and the sound of the room.
if you're looking for a really detailed and natural sound ribbon mic's are
the way to go. and being a figure8,they can be used for the mid-side
stereo set-up i mentioned in my first comment.for those unfamiliar,or
interested in MS check out this artical at uaudio/webzine.here's the link.
http://www.uaudio.com/webzine/2005/december/text/content4.html
by the way,the FatHead sells for $179.00 and comes in a cherry wood box
with a shockmount and polishing cloth included.all packed in a nice
aluminum flight case.

Re: microphones

I apply a sort of CBG ethos and make the best of what I have to hand - at the moment that means a mic that came with a computer soundcard. It's probably intended for "Skype-type" use and not for music recording, but I can get OK results with it if I play around with mic positioning. It seems to produce better sound than a couple of cheap unbranded dynamic mics I had lying around (which I think I got free with a Portastudio years ago). It would probably sound bad to someone who's used to proper pro-standard equipment but (in combination with Audacity) it's let me make the first steps in digital recording and that's worthwhile.

How much does something like a Cascade FatHead or a Shure BG4 cost?

Or to approach things from a different angle, can anyone suggest a brand or model of mic that will give a reasonable result without me having to spend much?

Michael, you are correct: WAV files are usually about ten times bigger than those encoded via MP3 or other "lossy" encodings. They are higher fidelity than MP3, which makes them suitable as raw material for more "serious" projects.

The Audacity files which I and some others have uploaded are actually a combination of a small "project" file plus a directory full of one-second WAV files (one per track for each second in the recording).

i've bee reading alot of the collab discussions here, and i don't
see any references to .wav files being used for collabs.
is this because .wav's are usually large files?
just curious.

hey ya'all,
my name is Myke, and i just joined this group.
i've been recording for years.but this my first shot at
recording the cigar-box guitar.

i'm interested in what types of michrophones ya'all are using.
and placement.i have quite an extensive collection of mic's,so
i've been experimenting.so far i really like the sound i'm getting
from a ribbon mic(the Cascade FatHead),and a Shure BG4.1 small
diaphram condensor mic, using the Mid-Side stereo technique. so far,
this has given me the most natural sounding recordings.

just interested in what ya'all are using.

Hi, if anyone is wanting to get as slide I have just got a MojoBone Works one which I would highly recommend!!!
I got a stubby slide which Randy made exactly the size I wanted….he makes each one individually by hand and it’s a real work of art! I’ll put a link to some photos below so you can see how beautiful it is, with hand carving all round the edges.
He also threw in some amazing extras as a surprise which you’ll see on the photo – a bone and wood pick, a bone sound hole cover and some bone nut planks….he also gives you some adhesive moleskin to put inside to make it fit just right : -)

Here’s a link to the photos http://www.cigarboxnation.com/photo/albums/mojobone-works

and there are more details here if anyone’s interested http://smokehouseguitars.com/blognewsroll/?cat=34

or Randy is on CB Nation http://www.cigarboxnation.com/profile/RandySBretz

loving what this group is doing!!....hoping to join in when I get my CBG's (and learn how to play them!)....what I've noticed is that lots of you are sharing the files as mp3...I was thinking to save the track as a wav would be better, as it's a non lossy format, whereas with mp3 each time someone adds to it and re saves it, quality will be lost.
I know wavs are large but as I wanted to do this recently (sent a piano piece I've done to Dennis Lord and he's going to add some of his 1 string magic to it!!) I looked into it and this site is great for sharing large files...really simple to use, and it works!!....http://www.sizablesend.com/

just bear in mind when using it that once the red bar goes up to 100% it's NOT done....keep wating until the fat green bar appears : -)
Hope some of this is useful...if not just ignore me, lol
