Hey Everyone,
I am currently serving in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. We just arrived not too long ago at Camp Leatherneck, and soon will be pushing out to forward positions. This is my second deployment to Afghanistan, and hearing about Cigar Box guitars made me instantly want to check them out!!!
I used to write some music, but I stopped completely when I determined that being in the Marine Corps would not allow me the time I needed to get studio time, record music, etc. Plus deployments have made it very hard. Having a Cigarbox guitar would fulfill a lifelong passion and aid in the downtime while we're conducting operations.
My Gunnery Sergeant showed me the cigarbox guitar that one of you kindly made for him. I would be honored if someone took the time to do the same for me too! I don't really know how to ask or who to contact, but I am trying to figure that out. I can provide an address here through a message.
Having a cigarbox guitar would put some music back into my life. Thank you for your consideration, and I look forward to keeping in touch with anyone who would like to send letters too. I'll be posting pictures and sending a few articles out about this program, it's incredible what you guys are doing for us over here. I don't really know what is avaialbe, but I just heard from a Lieutenant friend of mine who got a 4 string tuned to open G and he recommended it highly!
Thank You all for an incredible job - your support means everything to us out here!!!
Respectfully,
Cpl Parrish, USMC

I am in the process of rebuilding my inventory after the Christmas shopping season. I will put something together for you. I can do either a 3 string or 4 string model. Do you have a preference?
Thanks Dan!
A 4 string would be AWESOME for sure!!! What else do you need from my end to get things rolling?
Sean
Permalink Reply by Dan Sleep on January 13, 2012 at 11:40am I think that will do it. I will make a right handed, 4 string model, 24 inch scale, fretted unless you want fretless.
Do you have access to an amp? If not, maybe we can get a portable CBG amp for ya.
I will let you know when it is done, and I will get your shipping address at that time.

Hey,
I don't have access to an Amp at the moment, but it would certainly make all the difference! That would certainly amplify things out here :-D Thank You so much Dan, this is going to be an incredible way to relax between operations. You have no idea how much this means to us out here!
Permalink Reply by Dan Sleep on January 13, 2012 at 12:43pm We are a Marine Corps family at my house. My daughter served 4 years, and her husband is a staff NCO doing Ammo at Camp Lejeune, so we have a pretty good idea of what ya'll go through during deployment. We are glad to do anything we can to make it easier for you guys.
The only thing we ask is that it would be nice if we got a picture of you with your CBG that we can post here on the forum. It helps to connect a face with a name. :-)

Permalink Reply by Dan Sleep on January 14, 2012 at 9:41am Sean, are you a motorcycle kind of guy? If so, I may have something you might like.
Dan,
We will be putting together many pictures with the CGB's in the course of this deployment! We hope to raise awareness about the things y'all are doing, because it is so absolutely incredible in every way. I'm going to be in contact with a few friends who will hopefully publish some articles about it as well.
To answer the motorcycle question: I used to ride dirtbikes when I was younger, and I certainly like vintage motorcycles such as Harleys, Triumphs, and Indians.
Permalink Reply by Dan Sleep on January 14, 2012 at 11:59am Actually, when my son in law was there last fall, he said "the general" happened by and saw them messing with the ammo can guitar that Uncle John made for them, and the general said he wanted to get an article done on Marine Corps Times, but it never happened.
How about something like this, with a maple neck and ebony fingerboard:

That is Awesome. It reminds me so much of my old Fender Strat - and it will function perfectly as well :-)
I'm very good at raising awareness about different things among my peer group, and I'm a skilled writer and documenter as well. Getting an article put up should be no problem at all!
Permalink Reply by Dan Sleep on January 14, 2012 at 1:48pm OK, it shall be done. I will work on getting it finished up over the weekend.
Thanks Dan, you are making life out here incredibly easier. I cannot Thank You enough, and there will be pictures, articles, and of course original songs to follow!
