anyone know of a source for bigger amp wiring kits than the ones sold at CB Gitty? Got a cool box I want to build an amp out of...

Thanks so much, John. This is exactly what I was looking for. I REALLY appreciate the info. I likely will wind up mixing the left & right mono channels, as you suggested. I have access to some surplus/salvage stores and they often have small computer speaker sets. I might look something to cannibalize, if it works I'll go back for more. For grilles, I may just cut holes and and glue speaker grill cloth from the inside. The amp info is what I was really after and these are great links..gives me some direction and plenty to go on. Thanks again!

Suspect Device:  You can always duplicate the CBgitty circuit and use each circuit for one channel.  Put a stereo volume pot in front of the whole shebang.

If you want to design and build something from scratch, try the TDA2822M.  Little chip amp, you can use it for stereo or mono operation, 1 watt into 8 ohms for each channel if you use it in stereo:

Digikey:  http://search.digikey.com/us/en/products/TDA2822M/497-8863-5-ND/166...

Datasheet:  http://www.st.com/internet/com/TECHNICAL_RESOURCES/TECHNICAL_LITERA...

ST makes great little chip amps.  I use the TBA820M in my Stella amp kit.  Unfortunately the Stella is a mono only amp, so it wouldn't work if you need stereo.

On the other hand, if you are building this into a cigar box, do you really need stereo?  You can't get good stereo isolation in a single box!  Might as well mix the left and right channels together and just amplify the resulting mono signal.  This is what I do for my Stella based iPod amplifier (although the Stella, being a guitar amp, has a few extra guitar related knobs that I have to ignore, every now and then I grab the wrong knob without looking and suddenly everything is super distorted.)

If you need stereo, and don't want to do the design work yourself, there are a couple interesting options here:  http://www.electronics123.com/s.nl/sc.8/category.33/.f   (although I've never ordered from them)

In fact, one of those amps at that site is a kit based on the amp chip I mentioned above:  http://www.electronics123.com/s.nl/it.A/id.461/.f

As for speakers and grills, good luck.  I've still haven't found good speakers that come with good grills at a reasonable price.

nice work rodney!

have you tried pulling the oscillator tube(s)?  with these tubes out you might raise the B+ enough to get a bit more output.
