Just saw you asked for 4 string sorry.
I'd stay with open G since the banjo has four main strings tuned open DGBD. That gives you a place to start and lots of chord charts for banjo.
But Im a banjo player so Im partial to such things.
Hi... I'm new to the world of CBGs and am obviously trying to learn from the ground up. (I have played "regular" guitars for several years, though, so that is where my knowledge lies)
I know the theme that I keep hearing and seeing is that because there isn't a standard tuning for CBGs, there is no way to tune a CBG wrong. From a beginner's perspective, though, I feel like it would be a good idea to tune up in at least a "common" tuning. There are countless videos out there and it seems like if my CBG was tuned like the ones in the video, I could better duplicate the fingering and playing, thus it would be easier to learn. (or so it seems)
With the "regular" six-string guitar, even though there are a lot of tuning variations, if someone were to ask what the standard tuning is, everyone knows that it's EADGBE, right? Sooo.... with that in mind, if someone were to ask, what is the standard (MOST common) four string tuning for a CBG, what would you answer?
You know Ice Bob this is a very good discussion you got going on here. Although, the possibilities are endless in regards to how you can string and tune a CBG, it got people thinking about how they will make the tuning function. I think simply getting people to think in numbers (major scale tones) and see the relativity of the different keys might help to clearify it . Here is a good key chart. http://www.cigarboxnation.com/photo/13-keys?context=user
Thanks for sharing. Enjoy, Keni Lee
Bob and the tuning, crew, excuse me if this has been covered. I play mostly in DGB. I like it, but wish for a lower toned string-- like a doubled G string with the new G an octave lower (An A string tuned down to G). Has anyone tried that? If so, how does it play and sound?
I also use some ADF# and there, wish for a higher pitched tone. How well would doubling the D string work?? - with the new D an octave higher (a small E tuned down to D.)
