A good starting point would be a 3 string, fretted model, with a piezo pickup for use with an amp. Do you play guitar currently?
Dan,I do play acoustic, not great but not terrible.

This way you can use what you know from standard tuning to create simple chords. G chord is just the high string, 3rd fret. C chord is middle string first fret, etc.
When you're ready, tune the E down to D and you can grab a slide to add that bit. By then you will be ready to try different tunings to suit your playing desires as they evolve.
Hope that helps some.
Ed,Thanks,great info,Peter
Permalink Reply by Wichita Sam on March 5, 2012 at 6:06pm The answer to your questions depend on what kind of music you want to play and you skill level right now. Raw delta play sound great on three string fretless. more complex musical forms more strings and frets..... I do believe that it might be easier for a rack beginner to get better music out of a fretted CBG 3 or 4 string. tuned to an open cord and fretted across the barre can be a great way to start playing...
good luck...
ps: if you have any building skills at all, search the many tutorials on this and other sites... you'll enjoy playing a CBG that you built. If you don't have the skills to build, don't just buy off Ebay... too many hack builders... better to ask around here, get references, pay a fair price and get a good CBG... ooh, it's all in the neck....
Thanks for your help
Permalink Reply by ED (Bad Finger) on March 6, 2012 at 10:37am It's a little like asking someone else which style pizza you should order. NY? Chicago? California? Everyone will have an opinion, but we don't know you hate BBQ chicken on pizza we can't tell you to stay away from CA.
And the correct answer is that you need them all. You start with just one, maybe, but you end up with many - bought OR built. Enjoy.
Thanks Ed
Permalink Reply by MichaelS Country Boy Guitars on March 7, 2012 at 11:27am I think you should get a three string fretless, like one of mine, lol. But I only have one available right now. But seriously if you are interested, I will be making more.
