Permalink Reply by Dan Sleep on May 30, 2012 at 12:55pm Lots of stuff works. Eyelets (like used in shoes), pop rivets with the center nail thingy knocked out work the best in my opinion. Get rivets that have a little longer shaft on them so it will help them to resist the tendency to lean when the string pulls against it.
Nipples from bicycle rims work good too. Lots of them on eBay.
