I don't know if anyone does this or if it's standard practice..

So I got a nice piece of wood home for a neck that had a twist down it lengthways. It was a choice of being bored or just using it. So..

Here's my solution for getting my fretboard nice and flat for fretting.

What you see is a very nice flat surface with two sheets of sandpaper (80) double sided taped facing up.

I found it best to use only the neck weight as down force and circle the wood. 5 minutes later.. Flat and ready to go.

Good idea. Haven't done that with a neck yet, but I use a scaled down approach (sandpaper on a piece of granite tile) to sharpen my plane irons. You can flatten the back of the iron in no time.

This way gets it really flat. I kinda stole the idea from the fret file iron and flipped it upside down.

The papers come back off easily and can be reused.

Not the idea of the century but a neat trick that solved my problem quickly. Thought I might share

Good job.

Thanks. I hope it comes in useful for someone.

Wood can continue to warp over time or not, so keep an eye on it. Might want to do a search online for info to stop it from occurring more if there is anything that can be done.

I believe this twist is the result of being stored improperly over a long period of time. It should be ok. It was properly cured before it was stored. Bit I will be keeping an ear on it.

Thing is though that it is a gift for someone who wants to abuse it, so it's life will probably be very short anyway.

A lot of things contribute to 'warped and twisted' wood.

the most obvious is the home improvement big box stores standing long sticks on end, leaning back against a wall, in an uncontrolled humidity environment and it sags under its own weight.

another is uneven drying the rough cut at the mill before final-cut, and when the wet interior is exposed, well time to call a harp maker.

the one that will really make you pull you beard whiskers out is hidden stresses.  As a tree grows and spreads its limbs, the balance of weight shifts, the ground might shift,  a nearby tree that used to shade the trunk falls and now its gets baked by the sun for 5+ years on one side till another sapling fills in and provides shade again.  You'll have several nice pieces of wood, straight and flat, rip them down to size for a few CBG necks (exposing a hidden stress), go inside for lunch, come back in an hour and one of them looks like it was profiled by Salvador Dali.
