I cant believe how much I've forgotten so much being away from not making cbg's.       made this or should I say finishing it off after over a year since starting on it... the strings on it are E,A,D... now the question is what best tuning for these strings. the only one I can remember is GDg but I dont think this is ideal. this a fretted and will be used as such..no slide.   no doubt I'll be asking more questions as I go along.

Using the 3 base strings as you've stated, you can de-tune the first one and go with DAD, or if you want to be able to use GDG when you want with this, you shouldn't have any problems tuning it to EBE(very popular) and capo the 3rd fret when you want to play in GDG

thank you Richard.

My latest gits are now strung using the A, D, and G strings out of a 6 string set. I tune to GDg. Drop the A string down to G, the others are already there for D and g. I currently use .036/.026/.017 gauges from D'Addario EXL-110 sets. I used to use .042/,032/.022 strings, tuned GDg for a bassier sound, but lately I like the brighter tone of the lighter strings. Easier to bend, too. Many choices for tunings, and I have used EBe tunings on a few gits to make them more friendly for me to play with 6 string players. Thankfully, strings are still pretty cheap, so trying different gauges and tunings isn't cost prohibitive.

Good luck.

Perhaps also helpful....I make my gits 25" scale, with the occasional 23" scale. The tunings Richard and I offered you should work fine for any scale length between 23"-25". Any shorter or longer, your satisfactory results will likely vary for playability.

You can also go with FCF. I've got a git that I play in that tuning and it sounds good.

Nice looking git by the way.

1st of all the guitar is based on a 25.5" scale as all my guitar are. I've made about 10  all in all.   -----   string gauge is as follows 42,32,24   this what was recommended to me as I like mellow sound rather than the tinny sound. whether this is ideal ,I dont know. got to admit I know nothing musically at all .I just like hearing music like everyone else.with me being a retiree @ 66 years old I like to make these cbg's.it keep me occupied as I get bored just sitting around etc and also I'm not a gardener either.lol  started all this music stuff rather late so I've a lot to learn. as for Tuning-what I cant get through my head is this GDg,EBe etc .on my tuner Korg CA-30 it has G,G# what does # mean is it the as  sharper and the G is lower.I will be asking a lot of questions as I go along. what may seems obvious to you may not to me so please bare with me. thanks

Sharp means higher in pitch. More specifically, in musical notation, sharp means "higher in pitch by one semitone (A half step, or one fret on the guitar)". Sharp (#) is the opposite of flat (b), which is a lowering of pitch. The same note can be described as either sharp or flat, for example the note between D and E can be called both D# and Eb.

In western music (twelve-tone equal temperament) there is no note between B and C, nor between E and F. So you'll probably never see and E#, Fb, B# or Cb in music notation.

thanks.
