Can anyone recommend a pedal to get  a decent slapback using tube amp and 3 string cigar box guitar? I'm thinking Scotty Moore, Stray Cats through to The Cramps.

Loads of demos on YouTube of people using various delay pedals, but also using high end 6 strings with expensive amps.

Cheers

A boss dd-6 will give you that and so much more. I have one on my pedal board now. That's on the board instead of my TC electronics Flashback X4. Way easier to use. Get a good Boss used off of ebay. And what's really cool is you can demo a Boss pedal at most music stores. So you can hear it before you commit to it.

My biggest gripe about effects demos. Using a pedal that's supposed to make a solid state amp sound like a tube amp. Playing that pedal threw a tube amp... : ( Or worst. Turning the volume up on the pedal to the point of overdriving the tube amp.

I use a line 6 pocket pod for everything. You can achieve practically any sound and save your favorites.

Thanks for all the recommendations, keep them coming.

There's 2 American pedals on the market that are obviously aimed at exactly what I'm after, but at a price!

They're the Keeley Memphis Sun and the JHS Milkman, anyone tried them or know anyone who has?

Cheers

Let you know both of those pedals are gimmicks. They are simply watered down echo pedals. Neither of them would give you the opportunity to do anything but the narrow parameters they'er set with. The truth is if you set a pedal to have a slap back sound. Then play music that is traditionally heard with that sound. Your going to make that sound happen. Wether it's a gimmick pedal or a real work horse. Better to buy a real work horse pedal. Because it will give you the controls to do so much more. There are plenty of great echo pedals out there. Chose one that will allow you to do as much with it as possible. Get your monies worth out of it. Please don't fall into the digital ver analog trap. When your playing live no one will ever hear the difference.

Hi

Thanks 'Cause the Blue rat' and everyone else for offering their two penneth.

A Keeley Memphis Sun came up on eBay at a great price and I made a cheeky offer which was accepted. I know what you're saying about narrow parameters but basic slapback was all I was after, and you do get plenty more as well - albeit with a reduced delay time.

I've got an ancient Watkins amp with a Copicat built into the deck which can 'take me into space' if I fancy an adventure or two...

The Memphis Sun is great for me, but the others everyone recommended would be of more use to those who want to venture into pedals with a longer delay time.

"Train I ride..."

What do you think of the Memphis Sun? Can you demo it w/ a CBG, either video or audio? I use a cheap Dr. J Shadow Echo, but I'm always looking for FX...

Awesome! Can't what to hear what you do with it!

Here's an update.

Been enjoying the Memphis Sun but could use something a little 'warmer'. Up above the 12th fret on a 3 string it sounds a little harsh and 'clicky'. I'd say the Memphis Sun sound leans towards a lead guitar sound (clear and sharp) rather than a rhythmic picking, strumming feel.

While looking, a new Way Huge Aqua Puss Analog Delay MkII appeared at top of the Google page at a price similar to second hand one on eBay and Way cheaper than anywhere else. Took the plunge and am bleedin' delighted.

Best slap back sound I've used by a country mile (and with a country twang too). Put it through a Roland Microcube and a Watkins Clubman - terrific on both. Charlie Feathers and Luther Perkins delivered to your doorstep!

Above the 12th fret the notes are still sweet and bass is warm and rhythmic.

Only 300ms delay so not enough range for many, but it delivers exactly what I was after.

Couldn't recommend this thing highly enough to any CBG players after that sound.

Way Huge is a quality brand. Can't go wrong with that.  And it's a full range echo. So when or if you ever want to do something else it won't disappoint. Congrats Blind boy Fullers! Awesome buy!

What kind of budget do you have in mind? Analog (or analog-ish) delay pedals start out at about $25 and go up to $1000 or more for boutique ones with unobtainium chips or actual tape.

I've bought several inexpensive (less than $50) ones and the one I'd recommend for slapback is the Behringer VD400. The Ammoon/Rowin/Donner nano pedals aren't bad, they're a repackaged Hotone delay. However, it has a design problem with the power plug and the slapback is a little too bright for my taste. The Behringer Vintage Time Machine is a decent copy of the EHX Memory Man but, like its parent design, you have to like how it colors your tone.

Going up in price, the MXR Carbon Copy, Dunlop Echoplex and Boss Waza DM2 work well. I've also been looking into the Digitech Obscura.
