Hiya guys and girls,

I won this ace box on ebay from the Philippines and I want to build something really special.

I initially thought I would build a Tele style hardware box build as I want a bolt on neck and figured a 6 string would be very usable as a quick grab instrument.

Then I thought, I love resonator sounds! But, is it as easy to build a 6 string resonator? Or should I just build a four string? (Needing to build a neck).

All your thought welcome!!!

If you are using a pre-built bolt on neck, then a six stringer is not any more difficult than a 4 stringer where you have to build the neck.

If you have a love of resonators (as I do) then I say "go for it".

A six string resonator would be a nice instrument. The challenge will be finding a resonator cone that fits your box. Normal six string biscuit cones are 9 1/2 inch, but you can find 8" cones. The 7" Charles Atchison cone available from Gitty might work as well. It all depends on what will fit your box.

Thanks guys

Yeah I have a big box so a cone wI'll easily fit. I have not had much to do with resonators before, but I love the blues and love the sound.

I figured a Tele style 6 string neck would be easy enough to buy and put all the effort into the box.

It's the bridge setups I am not sure about, as well as the way to fit the cone. There are a few different ways to do it from what I have seen...

Here's two of my resonators, one four string one six, one dog bowl one proper cone, one with two pickups one with just a piezo on the dog bowl. One sounds great acoustic both sound good plugged in. I prefer to play the 6 string, more fuller sound. Both an easy build.

Cheers Taff

Thanks Taff,

I do like the six string... Where did you get the cone and bridge? What size are they?

Do you have the piezo mounted on the cone? And clearly I dont, but should I go for a cone cover too?

Great photo!

Rob

Hi Rob, the cone is 71/4", it was a gift from a customer who I think bought it from Gitty some years ago. The piezo is on the cone. There are 3 pots, volume, tone and a blender pot to mix cone and single coil pickups. The bridge I made after experimenting with a few. A cover plate is a matter of preference.

The two boxs for these guitars were made from the fence palings they are leaning on.

Thanks Taff,

Did you make the biscuit? I was going to buy a bridge, not too sure what to use yet.... But I guess I will now need more of a neck angle as a resonator?

I am going to have to settle for a 7" cone roughly too.. And I now need to decide what pickup to put in front.

I like the idea of a blending control, I bet you can get some glorious tones!!

Thanks again

Rob

Yep made the biscuit myself. Good thing about bolt on necks they easily adjustable.

Can't see why one would be harder to build than the other myself, it's just 2 extra strings.

I think he suggested the 6 string neck would be tricky...

Hi, yep the six string neck is a bit more work with the need for a truss rod and the tapered fitting into the larger neck block and a bit more carving, but I'd say the procedure is the same. I've never had to put a rod in a 3or4 string neck.

All my six string necks have been from other guitars, mostly strat style, but many have used modified acoustic necks.

So I have decided

I am going for a resonator... 6 string.... witha tele neck rosewood.

My aim is for a tabacco sunburst body, with electrics similar to yours.

Just need to choose a bridge!

Do you happen to have a wiring diagram? :)

Hi Rob, good choice. I can't remember the wiring set but I always use the diagrams from Guitar Electronics.com. Hundreds of wiring ideas there for all pickup combinations. Google them, in the meantime I'll have a look. The piezo on the cone is a bit bright for my taste but blending in the magnetic pickup adds heaps of bottom end.
Cheers Taff
