I am moving on to my third build (my second was a simple 1 string diddley bow on a cigar box). On my first build I noticed the neck bends a lot. Now I did make a rookie mistake and used really heavy strings so that could be part of the problem. I don't believe it was the nut or bolt because they are not set too high above the fret board. And the 5 inches I used for the tuning heads I cut an angle to it so that could also be part of it. So, how can I re-enforce my neck so that it doesnt bend so much?

Can you post a picture of the neck? That would help us diagnose the problem. There could be a couple of things that would case it to bow. What type of wood did you use? Did you cut a notch for the area under the sound board/lid?

I will take a picture of it. I used Red Oak for the neck and I did cut a notch for the area under the lid, and it is a through neck with about an inch out of the bottom of the box

Cool. I know that if you accidentally cut out too much for the notch, it can weaken the neck enough that it will bow. I always use lighter gauge strings to avoid that problem.

Gents,

Can you use a straight edge to figure out where the bow is? Is it under teh lid, or is it outside the box further toward the nut?

Couple ways to possibly fix the neck bow, if it's inside the box, and if there's enough depth to the box:

1) Add a piece of red oak beneath the neck where you cut out the lid notch, like so:

2) Get a piece of square steel tubing, and do like Maw did with this build:

Might be worth a shot...

I often reinforce the back side of the neck, depending on the build. On this one, I screwed and glued two 1/4 inch red oak pieces to the back of the neck.

Thanks guys! I do believe the bow is in the part of the neck under the lid. I like the steel piping idea to re-enforce the neck. Thanks!

i dont reinforce any of my necks. some are starting to bow. my main cbg's neck is straight as an arrow. i believe the reason for this is the grain of the wood is quarter sawn. before working on any neck i would recomend that you carefully inspect your wood and pay close attention to the grain

Do you plan on using that as a piece of furniture. Cutting a slot out putting a bar in would've sufficed. They make a hotrod two way adjustable trusrod for 14$the bit to cut the slot is twenty.but just have to buy it one time. They are very easy to install.

Rout a slot down the neck and epoxy in a piece of steel flat bar.Cheap and simple.

Yup this is the deal....

Is an arrangement like that sound for a 3 string instrument?

Does the poxy resin hold it completely well or does it need some steel peg dowels in there as well?

The I (or T) beam structural influence seems logical enough

The epoxy resin works fine you don't need any additions.

I've never used this on a three string
