The diameters can be whatever works. For the ones I build, I normally use a 1/4 x 20 for both the bridge and the nut. I just adjust the depth of the nut slot to get the strings to the correct height.

Use what you have. I'm partial to 1/4  20 eyebolts for the bridge and same size machine screws for the nut.
I second Dan.  I use 1/4" diameter then adjust the depth of the slot for the nut.
Thanks guys.
Used a 1/4 20 brass bolt for the nut on my last build and put it head down. The strings pull it up and the head of the bolt stops it from moving. The other way up the angle of the strings pulled the head of the bolt away from the neck and the strings went with it....

I run red fish line from tuners to nut to bridge at set up. Use dowel rods for set up...this will determine the string height you want, replace the dowel rods with the varied size of nut/bolt and bridge/bolt....been doing this on several set ups and it works great.....good luck man.......
