What's your scale (nut to bridge), how do you want to tune the box, and which string gauges do you use?

On my first CBG, I wasn't happy with the sound until the third set of strings.

If your strings are too loose when you have tuned them to the notes you want, then your choices are to either tune everything up a bit higher or use heavier strings.

Be careful with heavier strings, though.  Because they inherently produce lower notes, you may find yourself dealing with the opposite problem, where you have to tune them too tight to get the notes you want.  If you go too heavy, you might even be in danger of warping or breaking the neck.  Try strings that are a little heavier, and go from there.

too loose after tuning suggests your scale is measurably shorter than 24" or the wrong selection of strings out of a 6-pack?

Hi, more break angle over the saddle and nut will add a bit more tension on the strings. but possibly not doable now guitar is finished. I would be going up a gage of strings or two until I find the tension that works.

As mentioned knowing the scale length, string gauge, and for me, knowing how the neck is constructed and what of, could be a guide as to what gauges to aim for.

Cheers Taff

Thanks guys my scale is 24 the string gauge is
.026 .018 .013 .010
I tuned it to DGBE
I did finally get the issue with the strings sorted,i changed out the strings it sounds awesome now ) I'll have pics to share soon n possibly a video of it being played so you can hear it

Cool!

I think you've got good advise here. I find each guitar has it's best key to tune to. A long neck seems to like D best. A shorter neck likes G tuning. I like 12, 17, 22, 32 for strings. I tune DADA or GDGD.
