Ok, so I have started to shape the neck and it did not come out how I expected, I had my router bit depth too low. I will keep it though, still feels comfortable and my first build is a learning curve of sorts. I also made a mistake when I built it up where it meets the box. It must have shifted out a little when clamping and have a slight gap. Other than how it looks will that cause me an issue? The neck goes through the box. Lastly, the head, how long should it be? I have read 5 inches, I have read 4.5 inches. It is 5 right now.

Thanks for any advice,
Mike

Head. Not great but my first attempt.

Yeah, that router bit was kinda deep. When I used to use a router I'd always use the largest round over bit I could get to avoid that groove and still get a nice rounded side. Hand tools like draw knife and rasps work better for me now. But hey, if your hand is alright with it go with it!

The little gap shouldn't be a problem with the neck through the box. I make acoustic instruments mostly and with them I try for a real tight fit since the neck does transfer vibrations to the box.

If this is a 3 stringer 5 in. is plenty for the head. Most of my head mistakes have been too small so I usually plan a 6" head and then trim it if I need too.

Looks pretty decent for a first build and I'm guessing there will be more!

Thanks for the reply. I def should have tested the bit first. I have used it before but a long time ago so when I thought I remembered I didn't. It does feel ok though and my daughter likes it and for her so will keep it.

My plan had been for no gap but it slid I guess. Next one (yes there will be more, I have 2 more planned to start) I will make sure to add extra in the other direction and then sand if needed.

Yes 3 stringer

I did buy a spokeshave and am going to try that next but was impatient this time. Live and learn. :)
Thanks for the reply. Yes I've seen that and may try to do something it hide the gap. There is room to do it.

The headstock I used my router for and it was stressful because it is a full sized not a palm. Worked out fine though.

Thanks, I do think it looks nice and fancy as you say and is comfortable. Just was not my intention but I think is ok.

I am going to take a other crack at the fret cutting tonight now that I have a saw that is the right thickness. Hope to glue it all up later tonight. :)

Yep. :)  I am as ready as I can be.  I have been practicing on a piece that the first saw I purchased was a little to wide.  i have a ton of cuts from practicing in it.

1/2" round over bit, H/F rasp set, and about 4-5 hours work.

Most of my head stocks are between 5 & 6 inches. Final appearance decides the size. All I have made are 3-4 string CBG. I have done lap steels with 6 strings and the head stocks have been 6-7 inches. Yours looks fine and should finish out with some filing and sanding. My first attempt is a wall art piece at my daughters house. Rough at best but the colors suit her. ;-).
Really nice work. Is it two 1x2s glued together? Looks great.
Yes 1x2 or 3 or what ever I have. I do kitchen and bathroom renovations. All the usable "tear out" boxes go out front for free take away. Some of the particle board boxes crumble but have good hard wood "faces". Those are re-purposed into necks or wood toys.
